How’s financial aid for international students at Northeastern University?

RD
Rahul Desai Posted On : February 3rd, 2021
Studied at Northeastern University

You should try to learn about the financial aid for undergraduate as well as graduate students as both of these have different types of grants, scholarships and requirements. Since international students are unable to qualify for US federal loans, they have to pay up more but they can ease off their burden by doing part time work by making some money.

Students placed in the top 10%-15% of Northeastern University’s pool are given preference for competitive merit awards which is between $10000 and $25000. As an international, you wont have many funding opportunities. You can get financial relief through mostly these:

  • As a University Scholar
  • Need-based scholarships based on expected family contribution
  • External Scholarships
  • Merit and Talent based scholarships

If you enter as a university scholar, then you can get your entire tuition waived and you only have to incur costs on room, board and other personal expenses. For this, you should have an outstanding academic record in order to be selected. Ofcourse, this will be another challenge to be their top candidate in order to enter the college as a university scholar.

If your expected family contribution(EPF) is less than the actual tuition fees, then you may be awarded a scholarship or a grant which will help him cover up the remaining tuition. However, the EPF amount is low and there is no guarantee that the rest of your fees will be covered. You can get $5k- $15k in grant award for tuition.

As an International student, you may find it difficult to avail scholarships unless you have an excellent SAT/ACT score with an impressive extracurricular profile. You should work hard on making a good profile to stand a chance to win these scholarships. Students with good extracurricular activities get recommendations and get their fees waived off or whatever scholarships they have won.

You should contact the college regarding this in order to have better insights and options.

Which university is better, university of Colorado, Boulder or Northeastern University?

EM
Evan Mehta Posted On : February 3rd, 2021
Studied at Northeastern University (2018)

Everyone has different criteria and experiences and if you ask me, Northeastern was not that great an experience because it was a private school and for me money was an important factor. If you consider their rankings, it is obviously better ranked than University of Colorado which ranks at 103rd place while NEU ranks at 49th place in the national universities.

Northeastern University

Northeastern University offers rigorous academic learning and continuous opportunities for the students. It received 62,000 applications to fill out mere 2800 seats during 2018 and 2019 which means you’ll find a lot of competition here. It also has a great reputation as an innovative experiential university and it also has a co-op program. You’ll gain a lot of theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience here. It has abundant resources you can utilize.

University of Colorado

You can definitely consider this because of easier admissions- it has an acceptance rate of 78% and an early acceptance rate of 94.7%. You’ll also have 43.8% of its classes with less than 20 students.

It also offers need based financial aid to 33% of its undergraduate students and the scholarship or grant award ranges from 3000-15,000 USD.

Here’s a quick comparison of both universities:

However, that may not really help you in making this decision alone. To choose a college, you will really have to dig up information related to your classes of interest, what experience you are looking for, or which college has a better scope for you to land a high paying job in return of your money. You should decide after evaluating different options and choose the college that is going to help you deliver the result you want to achieve.

MS
Monica Sharma Posted On : February 3rd, 2021
B.A Psychology, University of Cincinnati (2019)

Both the institutes have different characteristics which distinguish them from one other; so you have to decide which college you want to depend on your needs, requirements and the kind of experience you wish to seek. Miami University may be tough for undergraduate education but the University of Cincinnati has great graduate schools. There is a lot of diversity at the University of Cincinnati and the number of international students is also very high.

Miami University is a public institution situated in Oxford. The area around the school is rural. Most of the students live on-campus or in nearby apartments off-campus. Their fraternity or Sorority culture is solid and existent in the school. You’ll find their campus beautiful and full of activities.

The University of Cincinnati is also a public school with an urban setting. The university’s medical school is pretty good and they have a large engineering school. Other than that, their law school, school of architecture and design, nursing school, also have a great reputation as well. There are a lot of research opportunities available to you if you are keen on engineering or sciences. The Med school at the institute also offers great chances for students willing to study in a medical-related field and is renowned for its faculty.

Here is the comparison between the University of Cincinnati and Miami University:

Content University of Cincinnati Miami University
Average Cost of Attendance USD 43,490/Year USD 54,916/Year
Acceptance Rate 88% 74%
Graduation Rate 68% 80%
National Universities Rankings #143 #103
Median Starting Salary USD52,900 USD54,600
Top Recruiters Aramark Corporation, Ashland Inc, Bestek Global LLC, Fifth Third Bank Barnes Dennig, Ernst & Young, PwC, RSM, etc.

Both the universities have solid departments but the atmosphere and experience at each place are surely different. If you are keen on Humanities or teaching, then you should choose Miami University. The institute excels in producing educators for a long time and Western College surely added a lot to this factor as well.

It is well ranked and presently at #30 among US’s top CS schools. You'll get access to many fields like Networks, Big Data, NLP and no shortage of research opportunities. You'll also have no problem finding internships or jobs. You'll even have over one offer if you're good. OSU is a great university to pursue master’s in computer science from. It is one of the 14 departments in the college of engineering offering master’s and doctoral degrees. Here are some quick stats:

QS World University Rankings by subject 2020 : Computer Science and Information Systems #151 – 200
THE World University Rankings by subject 2020 : Computer Science #101 – 125
US News Best Computer Science Schools in the USA #30

The professors at the university have done some of the best research in the fields related to computer science, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing (NLP), High Performance Computing (HPC), Big Data, Networks etc. Thus they include the graduates in their groups which is a great learning experience for the students. In addition they also may also include some practical projects relating to implementation of the topics researched. Is it difficult to get into Portland State University?

KT
Kim Tan Posted On : February 3rd, 2021
Studied at University of Waterloo

The difficulty level mainly depends on the majors you want to get into. The acceptance rate of the PSU is 96% which means it is not hard to get into. The admission procedure also changes depending on if you’re applying for an undergraduate or graduate course. Some majors are easy to get into while some are hard to get in, usually the in-demand majors have a larger applicant pool so there is that. Completing the program is more difficult as compared to getting in. The best thing about the institution is that the professors want their students to excel and become successful. If you’re an international student, you’ll have to provide many additional things like TOEFL/IELTS scores and some other exam scores depending on your program.

The admission requirements are different for freshman admits and transfer admits. The only requirement is to meet the eligibility criteria for the major you are interested in. PhD programs are hard to qualify as they are only admitting the best applicants. You also need to meet the course-specific requirement for your majors like CS, School of Music, etc. For admissions in Music major the applicants should clear the audition round and for CS the applicants should gain minimum grades for mathematics and CS classes and meet GPA requirements.

Acceptance rate 96%
International students’ percentage 6%
Students faculty ratio 21:1
Students retention rate 74%
TOEFL 71
IELTS 6.0
PTE 53
SAT 560
DET 110

You can apply to this university and expect to be accepted here as the university is not hard to get in if you meet all requirements.
