What is your review of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College?

I went through the Electrical department at Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College from 2014 to 2018, so my insights might be a bit partial. But let's dive in.

Is Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College a solid choice?
Absolutely. JGEC stands as one of the oldest and most respected government colleges in West Bengal. It opened its doors in 1961 and is now an autonomous government institution. It offers six departments: Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical, Electronics & Communication, and IT.

Why do I think so?

• Extensive alumni network: Being one of the earliest government engineering colleges, JGEC boasts a strong alumni network. For instance, a friend of mine was interviewed by a TCS representative who was also a JGEC alum, and he ended up getting the job.
• Budget-friendly tuition: The fees are quite low. For ME, EE, and CE, it’s Rs 500 monthly; ECE and CSE are Rs 1000, and IT is Rs 2000 per month. My entire BTech cost me about 45k.
• Qualified faculty: Most teachers at JGEC are highly educated, with many having graduated from Jadavpur University, IIEST, or IITs, ensuring quality education.
• Decent placements: To be honest, mainly IT companies like CTS, TCS, Wipro, and IBM recruit here, focusing on CSE, IT, and ECE students. Some core companies, such as SPCL, ITD, and L&T, also hire from ME, EE, and CE.
• Talented students: JGEC attracts top students from across West Bengal, so the student quality is impressive.

Yet, JGEC does have some challenges.

• Remote location: Jalpaiguri is 12 hours from Kolkata, which makes some students and companies hesitant to come. Those preparing for GATE or CAT might also find it hard to access good coaching, which is a significant issue.
• Challenging academics: As an autonomous college, JGEC sets its own exams and grading. Scoring high, especially in core departments, is tough. Unlike WBUT colleges, where you can memorize guides for good marks, here you need to engage with classes, books, and notes.

In summary, JGEC is perfect for dedicated students from financially challenged backgrounds. However, if you're from a well-off family wanting to stay near Kolkata, consider IEM, Heritage, or Techno India.

Here's my straight-up honest take on Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College. Some folks might not agree, but that's totally fine. I'm a senior in CSE, and I've landed a job with Bosch.

First off, just because a college is government-affiliated doesn't automatically make it top-tier. It's still a tier 3 college, much like many private ones out there. I'll break down why I think so. Feel free to share your thoughts.

Not a university yet: This college has been around for 65 years and is still autonomous. While it might not matter much, it does make you wonder if something's off.

Academics: Outside of CSE, regular classes are pretty much non-existent for other departments.

Seniors: I was lucky to have some awesome seniors who were super knowledgeable and skilled, and they went on to do great things.

The coding culture here is among the best in West Bengal, which is the only real reason the college has any recognition.

Placements: In 2021, only about 30-40% of students got placed. Most of the good placement news is from off-campus efforts. Some of my friends got into top companies like Amazon due to their own skills. The college didn't really help in this regard. Honestly, only 2-3 companies visited for placements, and about 80-90 students from the entire 2021 batch got placed. Considering each department has around 65 students, you can imagine the situation.

To all future students reading this, if you can, consider other options. While you might find a nice campus and supportive seniors here, you'll need to work extremely hard in your final years to even get an interview. If you doubt this, talk to someone from a tier 3 college about how tough it is to even get a call.

If you have the means, you might want to consider a well-known private college like VIT. Though the situation is somewhat similar there, you'll at least have the chance to interview with some top product-based companies, giving you a shot at a good job.

I chose the Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering at Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College primarily because of the affordable fees and good placement opportunities. The average package is about 9 LPA, with the highest reaching 65 LPA. The faculty members are quite experienced, and they're always there to help when needed.

The curriculum is practical, but I feel it could include more modern technologies. The campus life is quite lively with festivals like JECLAT and SRISTI, and there are various clubs to join. However, the hostel facilities could be better, especially in terms of food quality.

Autonomous Government College: JGEC isn’t just a top-notch technical college; it also has the status of being both autonomous and government-run.

Faculty: The professors here are fantastic, especially in departments like Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, and Civil Engineering. They are supportive throughout the course and even afterward.

Alumni Network: The alumni network is extensive and global. They organize various programs that benefit current students. Many alumni hold positions in top MNCs around the world, and they are also found in public sector units and prestigious universities like IITs and UNT Dallas.

Placement: This is often the main concern when choosing a college. In 2017, students got jobs in companies like CTS, TCS, Infosys, and Amazon, among others. In 2018, students were placed in firms like Robert Bosch, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments. As you can see, a large number of companies recruit from JGEC each year, surpassing most other colleges in West Bengal.

Jeclat and Sristi: Jeclat is North Bengal’s biggest fest, attracting participants from many colleges. Performances by bands like Anupam Roy Band and Rupam Islam’s Fossils have highlighted past events. Sristi, the techno-management festival, is also the largest of its kind in North Bengal, featuring technical workshops, seminars, and competitions, including robotics and management events.

Environment: The campus is lush and located at the foothills of the Himalayas, offering beautiful views of tea gardens from the hostel. It’s a perfect place to study, and you’re likely to form lifelong friendships here.
