IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering offers a comprehensive curriculum with abundant internship opportunities from top-tier companies like Google and Microsoft, making placements exceptionally strong, often above 85%. In contrast, while IIT Roorkee's B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering has a solid reputation, the detailed insights into its placements are less clear, suggesting it may not quite match IIT Delhi's placement figures. Campus life at both institutes is vibrant, but IIT Delhi's diverse clubs and annual events like Rendezvous and Tryst add a unique flavor.

Personally, I'd lean towards IIT Delhi for its better placement prospects and overall student experience, especially if you aim for roles in top tech firms or wish to pursue higher studies abroad. If you're more inclined towards electronics and value a slightly different environment, IIT Roorkee is still an excellent choice.

Okay... my advice is to not rely too much on the branch change option. It may sound straightforward, but it's not that simple. It depends on many factors, and it becomes increasingly challenging when considering CSE or EE. It's relatively easier to switch from Civil to Chemical or Mechanical.

Now, regarding placement opportunities, CSE definitely takes the lead. IIT Delhi Mechanical is also decent if you don't limit yourself to just Mechanical jobs. There are some fantastic opportunities in Mechanical with companies like ITC, HUL, P&G (FMCG), or TransOcean, Schlumberger, but the intake is quite low. As a result, many Mechanical graduates end up in Consulting or Finance roles. The core Mechanical jobs (like GE, Tata, etc.) often pay very little and don't fully utilize an IITian's capabilities, which can be frustrating.

Congratulations on your rank! Here’s my take:

  • The average package for Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi is around 9–10 lakhs. If you have a strong interest in how machines operate, how cars are manufactured, etc., then IIT Delhi is the way to go.
  • The average package for Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) is higher than that of Mechanical. If you’re fascinated by how circuits function, communication signals, etc., then ECE is definitely the better choice.

Both IITs offer top-notch facilities. IIT Roorkee is set in a stunning natural environment. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal preference.

All the best!
