Remarks
The college is in a very rural place hence it doesn't get the attention it deserves. That affects the placements as well and also inspite of being a premier government engineering college of West Bengal, students still think twice before taking admission due to its rural area.
Course Curriculum Overview
The college is under the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University Of Technology although it has an autonomy over academic affairs. That means, that the course structure and the examinationa were conducted by the college itself internally. It was an 8 semester course spread over a 4 years span.Semester exams were not an hectic ordeal if classes are attended regularly. This is because, exam paper setters are the subject teachers themselves.Hence, class notes are a major factor.Lab facilities and lab assistants were excellent.Never faced problems with lab exams.Internals and classtests were announced beforehand giving ample time for self preparation. To summarize, hectic would not be the correct word, rather being up to date with studies would give enough time for chilling out with friends.
Placement Experience
The placement has seen a downsurge over the last 5-6 years. In civil engineering, companies such as M.N.Dastur, Shapoorji Pallonji Group, Paharpur Cooling Towers, Ashiana Housing and Patil Railway Infrastructures did on campus placements in 2016.STUP Consultancy did off campus placements too.Apart from civil engineering, core-derivative departments such as computer science and information technology have great placements in TCS, Infosys, Capgemini and the like.Stipends in these companies varied according to company policies. But on an average scale, 3.2 LPA would be more or less every placed student would get.Interships were not organized by the college but they would give permission and recommendation for any type of internship and vocational training.
College Events
JECLAT is the annual cultural fest and is supposedly the largest fest conducted in North Bengal.Almost running over a week or more, events such as rangoli, love letter writing, mimicry, comedy, painting, singing and alot of events garnish the entire fest. The fest ends with a social nights where Hollywood and Bollywood performers are invited to sparkle up the event.Sristi is the techno-management fest of the college held separately. Here Robot Wars to business planning are major events. The live counter strike event is a special attraction too.Gaming events range from counter strike to fifa to nfs including chess, carrom etc.Bridge the gap is another event for civil engineers were bridges are built by participants with ice cream sticks.Apart from these, quizzes and debates are also organized. There are separate fests such as Calliphony-music fest, Wavezz-Dance Fest and Depicta-Short film and Drama fest. All are organized well before exams and smoke time to prepare, participate and enjoy.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Being a government college, it's the most feasible college in terms of expenses. For core departments the semester fees were around Rs.4000 and the semester hostel fees was around Rs 8000.That means a rough amount of Rs 12000 would cover up the college expenses for every six months that is each semester.Apart from these, a Rs 1000 fees was taken for exam registration every semester. For non-core departments the expense was a bit more by Rs.3000 for each semester in comparison to core departments.Hence, for non-core, a semester spending of Rs.16000 would be enough.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are small scholarships granted by alumnis of the college to the needy.Generally the fees are too less for a loan. But any bank would provide a loan easily as it's a government college.I had used a small education loan from the United Bank Of India to clear up a few expenses.
Campus Life
There are more boys than girls, a gender ratio of 5 boys to 1 girl in the campus maybe.Workshops are held during tech fest and also a few in the middle of the sessions as well. Most students are from West Bengal but the religious diversity is high. There are no such socities regarding culture and we all used to mix up and stay as one calling ourselves Jolites, the campus word for being a JGEC student. The campus had a student Union but not a political one.JGEC is a fully non political campus.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel fees varied from Rs7500 to Rs9000 per semester.Hostel facilities need to be applied in 1st year and although most get hostel admission, there remains a chance of not getting a seat too.The hostel rooms are average but food is a bit poor, makes you yearn for yours moms home cooked meals.
Alumni/Alumna
Seniors and alumnis are helpful if they are approached and properly interacted with.Seniors during my time helped me alot regarding facing interviews to opinions regarding which placement to opt for.Ai also received books from seniors when they left the campus and they helped me in my later preparations for higher studies as well.
Admission
I got selected through WBJEE 2016 which is a yearly engineering and medical entrance exam in West Bengal. After ranks are declared, an online counselling session. In this online portal, we had to fill in our choices for colleges and the departments that we wanted to opt for. Then, by ranking order, we would get to know our departments and colleges. There were 3 rounds in this online counselling. So, a candidate had the option to upgrade to a higher choice after each round till the third round.Once, I got my college i.e.JGEC and department, we had to go to the administration section of the college, show the documents downloaded from the online counselling portal, pay the initial fees that will be mentioned and then we were admitted and good to go for the next 4 years.I wanted to study a core engineering stream in a government college, and hence my above choice.
Faculty
The faculty are all great and helpful. They are mostly Phd from IITs or foreign universities. However, teaching varied from professor to professor. Some had a great way of addressing students and making the subject interesting and easy to learn.Whereas some would go on in a more professional way making learning a bit harder.Exercises and example problems would be solved in class by all faculties. In short, obviously they were all highly highly qualified but their teaching approaches were different, which made some more popular among students in relation to others.
