Remarks
The climate in Kharagpur is really awful, it is worst one I have ever faced in my life. Also. , kharagpur is known for bad food quality. But people usually go out to eat or there are many canteens to satisfy the taste buds.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am a fresher and so, I don't have much knowledge about my department. But I can say that the math we are taught is quite complex, different and interesting than the math we were taught in JEE. Our department has contacts with one of the finest institutes around the world, so anyone who want to pursue pure Mathematics or finance orany other AI related stuff is more than welcome. Our department being a theoretical one, doesn't have much labs. Mathematics and Computing is one such course wherein students have more free time than other courses, but the math usually gets very complicated. So it ultimately depends on the way a student accepts it.
Placement Experience
Being an IIT, the placement scenario is pretty good. Yes our college does provide internships. Usually the software companies like Microsoft, Google are open to anyone with a good coding profile but are mostly interested in departments like computer Science, Mathematics and Electronics and communication Engineering. I haven't done my internship yet but, I think the average stupend is around 80,000 rupees. People also do internships in research institutes like IISC Bangalore.
College Events
We have the Spring fest which is happening at the moment i'm filling this form. The spring fest is one of the largest cultural festivals done by any institute. Our Tech Fest is Kshitij which is the largest techno management fest in Asia. Management fest includes Global Entrepreneurship Summit in which different world leaders, co founders of the present unicorns come to kharagpur to give speeches. Apart from these there is an annual Alumni meet which happens in the first week of January in the Campus, wherein the previous batches come and share their experiences. Among these Spring Fest usually has the largest footfall of 20,000-30, 000 people.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is feesible for a common man but can be troublesome for someone with a poor background. The fee depends on the annual income of the parents. The fee is 1,45,000 rupees per semester. But if the family annual income is less than 1,00,000 per annum, the person gets a waiver and the fee reduces to 50,000. Apart from these, the Institute also provides a wide choice of scholarships.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes, I have applied for the Inspire scholarship, which is provided by the government to everyone who is pursuing an integrated MSc course. Also, I am currently paying my fees through a loan which can be called as student debt. People usually opt for the MCM scholarship.
Campus Life
Labs are pretty good. On a bad day a person may find the error too big to digest. Sports are usually the passion of everyone studying here. People oot sports for fitness in the future. After the women's quota was increased I see a lot more girls in the campus. A birthday party is usually never left not celebrated. People from different ethnicities and from different parts of the country come here to pursue their education which leaves a chance for others to know more about different cultures. People usually never try to put the differences into a conversation, we are quite mature about it, which is expected by the society from such a large Technological Institute.
Hostel Facilities
The rooms are pretty average, good enough for a person to live. The facilities provided are quite good. Currently I share my room with two more people. Single rooms are offered to few in the sophomore year and to everyone in their third year. Our hostel(or Hall as people in KGP call it) is the youngest one in the campus. So compared to other halls we are pretty good in terms of room quality.
Alumni/Alumna
We currently have The alphabet's CEO, Co founder of swiigy, CEO flipkart, Director IIT Bombay, and many many more as our alumni. Seniors are always quite bossy when it comes to interaction BUT when it comes to serious issues they are always in support. A typical corporate environment is felt between a student and his senior.
Admission
To get into the IITs, one has to the JEE mains and Advanced exams which are considered the 10th and the 2nd toughest exams respectively. Once the rank list is announced, a person can get an admission in the IIT and based on the rank, the department can be selected. I had to select between Mathematics and Computing over Electrical Engineering, Electronics and communication Engineering because of the AI and Machine learning buzz all around the globe. I learnt that Mathematics plays an important role in these fields. Also, I had a zeal for Mathematics in my JEE days as well.
Faculty
Fabulous. People from different areas of research, who have done their PhDs from the premiere institutes of the world, who are single handedly driving India forward in terms of innovation and technology teach the students here.
