College experience

The one around the platform for an alumni network is definitely a feedback for my college.

I took Karnataka CET. I had a rank around 2000 out of some 1 lakh candidates who had appeared. I chose for BIET,Davangere due to a couple of reasons a good private college which has been there for decades.

The course was generic in the 1st year and moved towards the 2nd and subsequent years basis your specialization stream for us in Instrumentation Tech the electives ranged around Informtaion tech to electrical to electronic engineering subjects.

Given it was year 2002 when we had passed out it was the peak of the dot com bubble and hence not many of the companies turned out for internship or campus placements. But given the college reputation we were able to attract companies like Wipro,Infosys,Honeywell etc for both the internships. Stipends at that time varied but started around 15k month.

Again it is similar to the above wherein a few technology companies like Wipro,Honeywell,Siemens etc came for placements. The placement record due to the downturn was not great but still 20% of the batch had gotten placed.

The college holds an annual cultural fest called Davana It is pretty popular and all the affiliated colleges under VTU participate in the fest. Then the college encourages participation in state and national level fests and some seriously good talent was discovered by the college while looking for participation in different events.

I would say it was reasonable during our time. It was close to 30k for a year during our time.

I am not aware of any loan facilities the college provided. Does not mean the college didnt have any but I didnt avail of any. Most of our loans,scholarships were sponsored by our parents organisations for example Telco,Jamshedpur as we were able to meet their norms.

Campus life was definitely interesting with a lot of on campus activities like annual events like Davana or hostel events quizzes,debates,skits or inter hall cultural fests etc. They were definitely great in my opinion.

Hostels were above par with clean shared rooms,nice canteens with hygenic food,very reasonable rentals as compared to staying outside and a real value for money with again a great platform for networking.

One aspect I did not particularly like about my college was the lack of any strong alumni network. The college does not take great interest in forging this nor were the students particularly keen on this. Which was not a great aspect because you attend college to network along with gaining learning.

It was an average experience there were always internals accompanied with external university exams. The atmosphere was definitely that of seriousness and competitiveness which most of us liked.

Faculty was average. Some of the senior faculty was from strong reserach and PH.D backgrounds whereas the junior faculty was from the alumni of the same college.
