Remarks
No bad remarks. Only good memories Excellent management.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course content was fabulous. It was honed to perfection,by the eminent faculty of those years. There use to be practical sessions to impart on hand experience to the budding engineers. The course was divided into 10 semesters of18 weeks or so each. There use to be appraisals in between to assess one's performance to grant scores for internals and each semester ended with exams. I even today remember the immaculate labs of electrical engineering and hydraulics and of course machine labs of mechanical engineering. The library is a prized possession of this institute which use to remain open 24*7 almost. Campus placement were not very high at that time, nevertheless quite a few reputed companies use to visit the campus.
Placement Experience
Although well established placement department was there during that time very few students use to get placements. Internship is a newly introduced concept. However during that time industrial visits/on hand training courses used to arranged at regular intervals.
College Events
Cinemas on weekends /holidays {open air theatre} Sumptuous dinner on month ends with interaction with warden of the hostel blocks. Trecking to nearby places/adventure activities Treasure hunt on occasions Lectures by eminent guest facilities on occasions Ganesh chaturthi celebration Election to the college union
Fee Structure And Facilities
The course fees were very moderate. Every rupee would be reimbursed by way of scholarship. But the living expenses were quite significant to the lower income group students which again would be reimbursed through merit cum means scholarships periodically.
Fees and Financial Aid
I have availed merit cum means scholarship that are awarded to meritorious students whose parents income is less than certain threshold. Scholarships are awarded based on scores achieved in the competitive exam held for the purpose. I also availed SBI education loan of 10000 for 5 year course.
Campus Life
Predominantly the course use to be male dominant. 97%.Electronics, Metallurgy some time civil engineering would have female students about 3%. Dormitories parties are generally monthly affairs which use to be well attended and cherished by both student as well as faculty. There use tobe certain student exchange program from overseas as well. Ethinicity by and large Asian only. There was no political intervention. Economic status of majority students is moderate. In tolerance is never heard or experienced. Campus is very vibrant echoing the Indian sentiment, unity in diversity.
Hostel Facilities
Yes, the college is well endowed with five hostel blocks. 90% the students opt for hostel. First block has three students sharing facilities well equipped with study table, cot and bookshelves. Wash rooms well maintained and adequate.
Alumni/Alumna
Well connected alumni groups are thriving to give insights to on goings in the world Periodically lectures are arranged at Bangalore from eminent alumnus /erst while faculty.
Admission
It was everyone's dream to get into this wonderful institute who passed 12th with PCM stream with competitive percentage. It holds true even today. I applied for admission to this college through Directorate of Technical Education, Bangalore during 1979.I was confident that I will be called for interview but was not sure of getting the course of my choice i,e Electronics Engineering. As expected I was interviewed during April 79 and offered admission to Mechanical Engineering course, which I gladly accepted.
Faculty
As I stated above the faculty at KREC, Surathkal was very eminent at that time quite a few professors were doctorates and experienced not less than 7 years in the curricum as far as my knowledge. There use to be mentors for small groups of students to guide them in their studies and to direct them to realise the dreams they aspire for. I very much remember my interactions I had with my mentor with nostalgia.
