Remarks

We had a real charming time for the period 1975-1980 at our college. Staying away at Hostel from houses added to our independence and we got a chance to closely mix with people of varied taste and culture. All our batchmates still cherish the college days and our bonding with college/hostel was so strong that even now, every year a group of about 25 to 30 from our batch try to visit the campus to recollect the old memories.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

The curriculam was semester based and corrrectly oriented towards Industry application. The practical classes were very well thought of and we had exposure to many important industries of Bengal. We had summer internship programs in both our 4th and 5 th year which helped us gain insight of the industries which inturn helped us in our professional life.

Placement Experience

5

With the participation of students& teachers we had a small placement group which was taking care of the internships also.Apart from Indian navy, many state level public sector companies recruited from campus. Those days the CPSU s used to conduct their own exams for placement followed by interview. We attended special grooming classes which helped us getting placement in leading PSUs.

College Events

4.5

Being the only Engineering college of North Bengal in 1975-80, we used to conduct annual college function in a grand scale where many celebrities of Bengal in the field of art and culture used to participate. As a matter of fact the whole of Jalpaiguri district used to wait for this event. Apart from the annual cultural program, we used to conduct Marathon races etc to promote harmony between students and the local people. For the benefit of students we organized lectures from industry bigwigs.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Being a government engineering college, there was no room for charging capitation fees etc at the time of admission. The overall fee structure was very nominal those days and there used to be Government scholarships for meritorious and needy students. No additional fees were charged during admission. There used to be complete transparency in the fee breakdown.

Fees and Financial Aid

Scholarships used to get awarded on merit cum need basis. We had to apply in prescribed format and submit to Principal sir for his approvel. Once approved it used to go to Govt of west bengal and final award money used to come from government. The average sum was Rs.1200 per annum.

Campus Life

4.5

The campus life was very calm and quiet and ideal for studies. It was far off from the main city amid lush green surroundings. In fact a very reputed tea garden of Duncun group was adjacent to our campus. During winter,on clear days we used to have clear view of Kanchanjungha peak just sitting in the terrace. The hostel was very vibrant with Grand feast twice a month in the mess. The intermixing with students of different batch was very free. There was no caste/religion feeling and we saw people from very remote village of sikkim, Mizoram or Nagaland used to mix freely with us.The food quality was very good and it used to meet any good standard in those days.(1975-80)

Hostel Facilities

4.5

We were alotted hostel at the time of admission where each room was shared by three students of the same batch. Fourth year onwards we had single room facility and it continued till we graduated. The hostel fees were very nominal. It started with Rs.2400 per annum and ended with Rs.4000/- per annum at the time of passing out. Ours was a five year course (1975-1980)

Alumni/Alumna

We have very strong alumni network both at college and at Kolkata. In fact we got very good guidance from our college seniors which helped us in cracking competitive exams. In fact for me a very good vocational training was organised by one of my college senior. Now after having spent 37 years in Industry we try to guide the present final year students for good placements and also recommend them at verious industries for internship/placement.

Admission

Admission was thru Joint Entrance Examination of West Bengal Board of Examination for admission to Engineering Degree Colleges for the year 1975. Based on the examination a merit list was prepared and the selection to respective college and stream was done based on this merit list and the selection interview.

Faculty

5

In our Mechanical Engineering discipline we had about 12 lecturers with an average age of 40.Many of them were holding doctorate degrees while the rest was post graduates. They were having latest curriculam details of different institutions and few of them had industry experience also. This has helped our batch to a great extent.

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

Placement Experience:

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
