Remarks

The attendance criteria is strictly dealt with. Each student has to maintain overall 75% attendance and minimum 50% in each subject in order to qualify for giving the examinations conducted by the college. Attendance is very strict.

Entrance Preview

Got into one of the best colleges for commerce in Mumbai- Narsee Monjee College popularly known as NM College. I applied for a degree course offered by MU in Financial Markets. The admissions are based on merit and cut offs are really high for Commerce.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course is spread over 3 years, with each year divided into 2 Semesters. The course I am into focuses mainly on Financial markets and the subjects include Communication skills, accountancy, Economics, types of markets, statistics, financial systems and a lot more. The syllabus is quite exhaustive from 2nd year onwards.

Placement Experience

4.5

I haven't applied for one yet. But yes, one can get good internships though the Placement Cell of the college. Stipends are attractive. One can attend the Soft skills programme in order apply for placements and internships by the college. A lot of companies come to offer posts for the students at NM.Companies include KPMG, Accenture, Tata, Crisil, Deloitte, Edelweiss and many more. Log on to: www.nmcollege.in for details.

College Events

5

NM college hosts the biggest cultural and management festivals each year. Umang and Drishti are the festivals celebrated on a very large scale. Drishti is the biggest management festival in Mumbai and is a 3 day fest organized by the students of self financed courses like BFM, BMS, BAF. Umang is the biggest cultural fest organized by the Junior and Degree college students. Celebs are often seen here.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is quite reasonable, although it varies from course to course. Self finance courses have the highest fee amount as compared to other degree courses at NM. The fees are payable semester wise. The fees for NRI students is extremely expensive while for reservation students like OBC etc, it's low. For FYBFM, the fee for Sem 1 was around 12500 INR and for Sem 2 around 5000 INR

Fees and Financial Aid

The college is run by the SVKM group. Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal funds the aided courses offered at the college. Unaided courses have a higher fee. Self finance courses like BMS, BFM, BAF are unaided, hence expensive, while plain BCom is funded, hence less expensive. Scholarship opportunities are available and should be enquired about to SVKM. Admissions are on merit.

Campus Life

4

The college offers a good range of extra curricular activities which includes sports, both indoor and outdoor at various levels for sports enthusiasts. NM has its own cricket and football teams competing with other teams. Sports like chess, carom, table tennis and many more are offered to the students. Various yoga sessions are often conducted.

Hostel Facilities

4

I frankly cannot rate the hostel facilities provided by the college, since I live in Mumbai. SVKM does provide hostel facilities to ourstation students. There is accomodation for girl students also. Average cost for PG in Vile Parle could be around 8000 to 10000 per person per month. Am not very sure about the figures though.

Alumni/Alumna

Many Bollywood stars and actors have studied at NM in the past 25 years. Since its my first year at NM, I can't speak much about the alumni of the college. Notable alumni include Paresh Rawal, Rani Mukerji, Sonam Kapoor.

Exam Structure

The exams for degree college are conducted semester wise. There are six semersters spread over 3 years. First 5 semesters are conducted by the college on behalf of Mumbai University and the final semester by the MU itself. Exam patterns are for each semester:1 internal paper of 25 marks 1 sem end paper of 75 marks.Total 100 marks Pretty difficult to score well in theory subjects.

Faculty

4

The faculty at the college is highly experienced and teaching is based on practical aspect whenever possible. Good classroom interactions, presentations which nurture the soft skills of a student. Good use of technology by way of teaching through PowerPoint presentations. PS: use of mobile phones prohibited. XD

Placement Experience:

At TCSC placements are quite good as anyone. Even the SOBO colleges and Mithibai don't have placements as good as us. So this is why I always dreamt of studying here because since last 6-7 years, Thakur College placements have gone better and higher.

The good thing is that the college was not strict and was never forcing us to study rather it was seeing to it that it gave us proper advice and help us reach more towards my career goal. The bad part would be there were may staff which was very dull and was not kind, and no importance was given to correct their behaviour although it was evident by all.
