Review of SASTRA University

Academic wise the college is excellent. But the quality of hostels and mess should be improved.

Yes, the course curriculum is relevant and most of the part will be practical only. Which will very useful for future placements and the fourth year internship makes you a professional in this field. Yes, students were taken for eye camps that is organised at different locations.

The tentative percentage of students placed every year from my campus is 93-95%. And for the Optometry course it’s 100% The institution provides training for placement from the third year of the course.

There are many technical, cultural and sports events that takes place in my college. And all of them are national level. Students from many Universities and colleges in India take part in them. Each events takes place around 3-4 days. Many celebrities are also invited for the cultural events.

The program fee is 1. 5 lakhs per annum and it increases by 5% every year. The hostel fee is 10, 000 per year and the mess fee is around 3700 per month. The college accepts both offline and online mode for fee payment. There will be additional Exam and Breakage fee at the end of each semester. Yes, the college provides transparency in fee- breakdown.

I didn’t opt for any scholarship and education loan. But the college do offer scholarships for studying PG abroad.

The campus life is good. There are many literature clubs which engages you in many activities. There are many students studying from other states of the country. The Gender ratio is 50:50. There are no restrictions for other ethnicity, race and religion. But the girls, they do have many restrictions in hostels.

In the first year the rooms are sharing only. Which is 5 per room that too with the first years only. From the second year, you can decide the hostel you want from 5 other hostels inside the campus and you can also choose between single room, double sharing, four and six sharing. Many good quality PGs are available in Thanjavur city which is 17kms away from the college. The quality of the hostel rooms are okayish and food quality is poor. There will be frequent power cuts, water supply cuts and too many insects too.

The University is zero tolerant to ragging and if ragging is done it’ll straightly lead to expulsion. So the experience with seniors is very good and they are super helpful.

I wanted to become an Optometrist. Elite School of Optometry(ESO) in Chennai is the best place in Asia for Optometry. And ESO has collaborated with SASTRA University. So the four year course (3+1year internship) should be done first 2 years in SASTRA University and the next 2 years in ESO Chennai. The application will be available in SASTRA University’s website and students will be selected based on 12th grade board marks and NEET marks as it is a paramedical course.

There are around 15-20 faculties for this course. Average age would be around 35-40 and each of them hold at least one ph. D degree. The faculties are very familiar with their courses. Yes, the lecturers hold many relevant industry- experience and certifications.
