Remarks
For its academic excellence, specially in humanities and social sciences; the institution being a prestigious one in the country; my course (I opted the course as I did B.A. in the same course and wanted to pursue it further); the campus itself, including the huge library; low tuition fees as well as hostel fees; because I was staying in the same city where the institution is located for three years.
Course Curriculum Overview
The syllabus is quite updated and we are free to choose a paper l, that is optional in nature, from other centre too. Our centre is named as the Centre for the Study of Social Systems and the subject's scope is not restricted. The course structure encompasses topics from history, geography, political science, economics, psychology, culture and anthropology, medicine, religion, cinema studies, and so on. The course offers a paper to the M.A. 3rd semester students, named Sociology of Cinema, which is quite an interesting and engaging way of learning. The faculty members are experienced and focuses not only on studies or curriculum, but on overall personality development of the students. Anybody can approach them for academic as well as personal matters; though, it is through the class representatives, they communicate with the students when we are not in a face to face interactive field.
Internships Opportunities
Tezpur University, Research Intern, not stipended. Filled up the application form available on the official website of the University along with a statement of purpose for joining the internship. National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, NERC. Research Intern, approached personally.
Placement Experience
I have no knowledge about this, as this is the very first year of my University life. I am not well informed about the entrepreneur cell in the university.
College Events
I could not participate in many of them due to the outbreak of the COVID 19 in the first year of my university life. I witnessed celebrating Dussera in JNU and the number of people joining the celebration was massive.
Campus Life
Campus infrastructure in JNU is very good, at least what I have experienced till date. Each Centre has a library of their own, apart from the nine storied Central Library. The central library has a 24 X 7 reading room, apart from 4-5 other reading halls. It has a huge collection of books, has access to various national and international journals, newspapers, magazines and so on. There is free wifi in the campus which covers the residential areas too, i.e., the hostels. There are eateries all around the campus; the campus has a large stadium along with regular basketball, badminton courts. Some hostels need renovation in their toilets, bathrooms, and the rooms as those hostels are quite old. Construction of 2-3 new hostels is going on within the campus. The connectivity in terms of transportation within the campus is very good. Being a humanities and social sciences student, I do not have a clear idea about Laboratories.
Hostel Facilities
There are more than 10 hostels in JNU and as all of them differ from each other, I can not give a generalized view. The hostel in which I am currently residing is co-residential in nature. Both boys and girls share the same dining area and otherwise have separate wings. Personally I find the toilets and bathrooms to be quite small and feel that these needs a renovation. The rooms are shared by two and are quite spacious. The hostel authority provides the students with a bed, a study table and a chair. The rooms have built in cupboards and cupboards are spacious too. As there are 10-13 hostels in the campus, both for boys and girls, getting hostel accommodation is not very difficult and hostels are allocated on the basis of the entrance result. The room rent for double seater rooms are Rs. 10 per month and Rs. 20 for single seater rooms. Single seater rooms are only allocated to the research scholars. The mess bill is extra, depending on how many meals you eat, which again varies from hostel to hostel. Average mess bill ranges from Rs. 1800-2500. I stayed at a rented apartment near JNU for six months when I was not allocated the hostel, the rent was 8500 per month for a 1BHK house. The rent excludes water, electricity and maintenance charge.
