Nirmalya Basu's Review On ISM Dhanbad - Indian Institute Of Technology - [IITISM], Dhanbad

I had not secured a great rank in JEE Advanced. With 10k rank I had very less choices for IIT B. Tech. program. Moreover, ISM is world famous for its Earth Science branches and it's great chain of alumni network. For earth science branches IIT ISM Dhanbad has got no other colleges at par in India. Its infrastructure and education and alumni base is the best. Also, NIRF ranking is 12. So it's a best choice with this rank.

The Curriculum is not much updated but we are hearing that from next year there will be few changes in the curriculum which is ofcourse for good. New methodological approach will be taken for teaching. The curriculum will also be made a bit fluid and flexible to choose electives and also with practical experiments, lab works and projects which will be more lively than boring lectures. Coming to faculties, every colleges has some great one of them and some causing problems, but in IIT ISM the great one are more as it's a college with great legacy so its faculties are experienced and some are even an alumnus of the college so has a special bonding with it. Prof. Somnath Chattopadhyay is one of the best professors I have met and I know a lot more are there whom I will meet and they will inspire me.

The Placement and Job opportunities are really great. There are Placement Cells with Placement Coordinators and other professionals. Placement is taken with great care here. The Cell is very active. It also has an internal alumni base for the purpose of placements.

The college is the host of the largest technical as well as cultural fest of eastern India. The technical fest is CONCETTO and the cultural fest is SRIJAN. we are also the host of the largest sports fest PARAKKRAM. These fests are celebrated with great enthusiasm and huge funding. The sponsors and reach of our fest are of very high level. It's really a great opportunity to witness such fests being in college with the 24 hrs running schedule. It's a such experience which can never be expressed in words but have to be lived. The great celebrities are just the tip of the iceberg.

An IIT at the heart of the city would surely have an issue of space which is being faced by IIT ISM. Most of the sprawling IITs are in the outskirts of city with huge land but ISM is not that. It's a small area of around 400 acres well planned, lush green and modernly equipped. It give the opportunity to be in a city as well as enjoy a campus life with huge and beautiful campus. It has all the required facilities. A 24 hr ambulance service for a 24hrs well equipped Health Centre with an Emergency Ward. It has the Asia's second largest library with all the possible books in it archived. It modern facilities available in the library makes it the best place for the students to study- centrally air conditioned and great infrastructures within. A seven story library is the best source for a student to learn from. Coming to the sports facilities; name the sport and it's there in our campus. Every sport is encouraged and has a club of it's own in IIT ISM. A separate complex for Squash and Olympics sized Swimming Pool is few of them. Along with sports it also has a great number of Cultural and Technical Clubs and Societies with all modern equipments available for them to nurture students innerselves. The laboratories of the earth science branches is what the institute boasts in the world. The other branches also has a great and modern well equipped laboratories with sufficient number of lab assistants to assist and take care of rhe instruments.

The hostels are something to be worried about in the college. The twin sharing rooms are not very comfortable and has 2 beds and 1 walled almirah and also 1 desk with 12 hrs high speed LAN (internet) connection in week days and 24 hrs in weekends. The problem doesn't end here the mess has the best menu possible but the taste really sucks. The menu which is served is really very healthy and more than good for a hostel, but as I said the taste is just. The best part of hostel are the hosteliers and its sports and recreational infrastructures. There is badminton arena and also a big ground allotted for all hostels. There is also recreational rooms in each floor with TT table, etc.
