Remarks
The college had a good modern infrastructure but half of the classrooms were either unpainted or under renovation throughout the three years that I have spent in the college. Several areas were under construction which was a potential hazard to the students. I would rather prefer a heritage building like a south Bombay college than a modern half constructed college. The teachers were experienced but lacked the drive to teach efficiently. I did not find the staff extra ordinary. There was little to no connection between student and teacher. There was a lot of favoritism. Overall the college appeared mismanaged because they did not regularly update the college website and did not feel the need to email us the important updates such as exam dates, we had to run around the college campus to read the notice boards.
Entrance Preview
There was no criteria for an entrance exam for this particular course. I was eligible because I had passed my 10+2 grade examinations.
Course Curriculum Overview
Bachelor of Commerce is a very elementary course which needs to be upgraded on ASAP basis because of the competitive environment. It is not the fault of the college but the University of Mumbai for not changing the curriculum. It provides no assistance in appearing for professional exams such as CA, CS etc because the syllabus in those examinations is too vast.
Internships Opportunities
They do provide placement interviews in big companies such as JP Morgan. I have not attended any such program.
Placement Experience
Companies like JP Morgan, KPMG, PWC, E&Y have come to the campus and offered 10000/- to 20000/- monthly stipend. I have attended roughly one of those. Regretfully, I cannot provide you with the details of the number of students placed and the exact amount offered because I was not a member of the placement cell. But the college had a placement cell which conducted weekly meetings and trained the students for interviews.
College Events
There were monthly college fests such as Kshitij, Colloseum, Vaayu, Gnaritas, etc which focused on different talents such as dance, vocal skills, entertainment, knowledge, marketing, economics etc. The fund raising and sponsors were on a huge scale and they had concerts etc.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fees per academic year was 3000-4000 rupees because BCom is an aided course subsidized by the state government. It was very feasible considering the lower income crowd. It does not affect me much since I hail from a middle class family. We had to pay the examination fees seperately and they ranged from 1000/- to 2000/- rupees.
Fees and Financial Aid
I did not avail of any scholarship or loan nor do I know of any scholarship or loan offered by the college. The fees for this course were government subsidized so I do not think there was any need for students to avail of any loan or scholarship.
Campus Life
The campus life, in my opinion, was very ordinary since there was no open space around the college building. There were frequent college festivals which lighted up the environment. Overall, my college lacks the aura which the South Bombay colleges such as St. Xaviers and others have. The sex ratio was roughly 1:1. The crowd mostly included Gujarati folks (because of the Gujarati quota during admission) and lacks diversity as such. It has the higher- income class more than the lower income because it is located in Vile Parle (West). Celebrities frequented the campus during college fests.
Hostel Facilities
There is no hostel facility owned by the college that I know of. It is a standalone building with two other colleges in the same/ neighboring campus with a huge canteen. The caterer is Aditi foods Pvt. Ltd (Amar juice) and they provide food at a subsidized rate for students. The food is hygienic and tasty.
Alumni/Alumna
I was not in touch with any senior students but by what I experienced, it was very difficult to know many people in the college because of the huge population per classroom. The only time i interacted with senior students was when they were volunteering during the college fests.
Exam Structure
The exam structure was two exams per semester. One for internal assessment of 25 marks and the other for external of 75 marks. The exams in the first two years were assessed & conducted by the college itself but in the third year they were assessed and conducted by the University of Mumbai. The papers were easy considering I am a Chartered Accountant student and as mentioned earlier the syllabus needs to be revamped by the University to give some value to this course.
Admission
Firstly, we had to fill in an admission form, provide them with our standard 12 mark sheets and an affidavit stating that we are a Gujarati Student to avail the Gujarati quota benefit. Later, when the merit list was put up, we had to go to the college and pay the fees.
Faculty
The college has very senior and qualified professors but somehow they are not too inclined towards teaching the basic concepts. Overall, teaching has been taken very lightly and more emphasis has been given to penalizing students for lack of attendance. The college needs more young and a fresh crew of teaching staff.
