IIT Dhanbad worth joining.

Since college is located in Dhanbad which do not has air connectivity due to which many good companies do not come for recruitment. Also Managements of college is quite slow and should speediate various processes.

I took IIT-JEE in 2012. I got 199 marks out of 401. My rank was 5259. And I heard Petroleum Engineering was pretty good in Dhanbad, so I opted for this college.

The course curriculum was pretty good. It is well structured and helps the students in getting better understanding of entire field. Drilling, Drilling Fluids, reservoir and basic production is taught in 2nd year, Advanced production, well performance and well testing are in 3rd year, Enhanced oil recovery , offshore technology and Unconventional resources are taught in final year overall course is well structured.

Many companies visit our college to recruit students for 1-2 month internship. The experience with the companies is awesome. In 4 years we learn theoretical aspects of petroleum engineering but when we go to the field, we actually get the chance to see various operations and meet the finest persons in Oil industry. We get to learn the practical aspects of oil fields. The Stipend various from company to company. Apart from this my college also provides training opportunities to students for pursuing training in ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas corporation limited) and OVL (ONGC Videsh Limited).

The companies which generally come for placements are ONGC, OIL, Cairn India, Shell, Schlumberger, Reliance, Halliburton etc. Packages- 1. ONGC- 18 LPA, 2. OIL- 13LPA, 3. Shell- 18 LPA, 4. Schlumberger- 32 LPA, 5. Cairn - 13LPA, But placement at this particular time is not so good in Oil sector due to the low oil prices which I think will remain same for 1-2 years, so these companies are recruiting very few students. But other non-core companies also recruit petroleum engineering students such as future first, Mu Sigma , Beehyv Software solutions etc. in which students can try. Overall around 70 students were placed out of 120.

There are different festivals which my college organises. 1. Concetto (Techno-Management Fest) - It is generally organised in the month of September. It is one of the largest festival of eastern India. It gets huge sponsorship and participation ranges from 8000-9000 students. 2. Parakram (Sports Festival)- It is the sports festival of college in which teams from various colleges compete to win the title of best college. 3. Srijan (Cultural Festival) - It is the generally the most exciting festival. Various well-known singers and artists are invited to perform for the events. In this 3 day fest more that 10000 students participate and it also gets huge sponsorship.

The fees is 1,00,000 rs per semester, that makes it 2,00,000 per year. But the students whose parents yearly income is less than 5 lakhs gets 66% discount. And the people of higher income can easily afford it. So in my view fees is quite affordable considering the king of infrastructure and facilities you get.

1. My college offers MCM (Merit cum means) scholarship, which is based on student's parents income and students grade. A sum of 36000 Rs is awarded each year if students come into the criteria. 2. SBI also provides interest free loans for the people who need it for educational purpose.

1. Gender ratio is quite bad in my college. we nearly have 1:10, girls: boys ratio, which is not so good. 2. Student Diversity- There is huge diversity of students. We were having people from south-most part Tamil Nadu to North most part JK. There were people from Assam , Rajasthan and various other states. 3. Various Societies- Various societies were operative which includes dance, music, dramatics, literary club. Some technical societies such as Society of Petroleum Engineers, ASME, Robotics etc. 4. Sports- Awesome facilities for sports such as grounds for football, cricket etc. Swimming pool, Squash Court etc. 5. Workshops - Various technical and non-technical workshops for betterment of technical and soft skills of students were organised. Eg- Workshop by Ankit fadia for ethical hacking. 6. Labs- They have state-of-the-art facilities so that students can get good practical knowledge.

The hostels are quite good. All the rooms are 2 sharing, you get your own cupboard and bed. The hostels have a common room where indoor games can be played and students can watch TV. The hostels also have canteen and Amul Parlour and ground for students to play. Mess food is not so good and needs improvement.

IIT Dhanbad was established in 1926. So we have huge alumni network who also helps students in getting internships and better job opportunities. Also seniors are like friends who help juniors to cope up with various issues they face. They also guide juniors and helps them by sharing their experience. I also got internship opportunity in HPCL because of one of alumni of my college.

We have semester based system and a year comprises of 2 semester. Each semester has a mid-term and end-term examination. And Lab exams are there once a semester. The schedule of exam is not so hectic, student get enough time to do extra-curricular activities and can still score good marks in exams.

The form of IIT-JEE was released in December 2011 by IIT website. The exam was conducted in April 2012 and I secured 5259 rank. After that I took part in the counselling process. I filled the choices which I wanted to opt for. And finally according to my rank and the choices which I opted for, I was selected for B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering at IIT Dhanbad. After reaching Dhanbad Document verification and medical test was done and finally I got admission.

Some of the faculties are excellent, they took interest in teaching and have depth theoretical and practical knowledge and are qualified from the best institutes of India. Prof Sukumar Liak is the best faculty, He teaches Offshore technology and pipeline engineering and has in depth practical knowledge as well. Prof AK Pathak is a professor of drilling engineering and teaches with enthusiasm. Prof VP Sharma is HOD and is a professor of Well Logging and is also very good.
