Starting Point of My Professional Journey, 20 Years ago

GHSIMR was one of the best institutions in Kanpur. Belonging to the great JK group provides credibility to this institute. JK group has done a lot for the city of Kanpur especially in the field of education. I have cleared the interview of the panel of the selection board of the institution and finally got admitted to the institution. Students are from other states such as West Bengal, Delhi NCR, there in this institution. When I joined this institution I was happy to get selected to pursue my professional course. I still remember the first day when the Director addressed and welcomed us to the institution and specially mentioned the curriculum and other activities which we will enjoy during the days to come. The faculty was very supportive as well as very strict about the course work. Today when I am writing this review and am actually gone back some 20 yrs and still feel that my institution has converted me into a true professional.

I chose finance as my stream because I was good in accounts and taxation, however, I finally took marketing as my stream which was an extraordinary move for me but it was suggested by my faculty after realizing the hidden talent in me. I thank them today for that as I have been very successful in my career and serving media for the last 20 yrs in marketing and still rising. Though our batch was a small batch of 37 students I tell you what a batch it was. My batch was full of talent beside studies we were having cricketers including myself, musicians, singers, etc. There was an apt number of faculty and infrastructure available for the courses along with the extracurricular activities. The faculty also got involved in playing games with us such as cricket, Badminton and Table Tennis. The knowledge, qualification and teaching method of the faculty make us involved in studies with full enthusiasm. Though the course was difficult enough as it was a trimester based exams.

I have done my internship with Nerolac paints with a stipend of 2k per months at that point in time. My project was on logistic management. My final report was appreciated by the Japanese president of the company. My report of saving cost on logistic was adopted by the company in the conversion of their transport management from a half load trucks to full loads trucks on the same route in different days of the same week.

Campus placement was started at the end of the second trimester of the final year. Our placement coordinator was after our life to prepare for the interview. It was his (Dr Suneel Gupta) belief in each student according to the respective strengths of each student that all were placed before the final trimester exams. Companies such as Usha Shriram, Nerolac Paints, Mudra Coats, Dainik Jagran, JK cement were some big names that came for campus placements and our full batch was placed before having the degree in our hand.

At that point in time, the fee was similar to other institutions available but the infra and other facilities make it attractive to be chosen for. My fee for two years was 60 k / year. It was competitive but the books, library facilities, computer labs, etc. make it lucrative for the students. Job opportunities / Campus placement / Summer training was the biggest strength of the institution. I have done my summer training with Nerolac paints with a stipend of 2k per months at that point of time with pick and drop facilities and meals. I found Nerolac was a great company. I was selected by three companies before I have given my final trimester exams. All three companies were of repute, Dainik Jagran, Madura Coats and JK Cements offered me for management trainee. I have chosen Madura Coats as my first job.

Campus life was full of fun with responsibilities. Classes with more practical knowledge make us compel not to miss a single one. attraction towards learning computer skills forces us to give extra hours at the campus. We use to spend time in the library for our case studies as there was high competition amongst the students for the same. A lush green campus with a playground although not so big as compared to today's campus but it was big enough to accommodate all the activities there.

The selection process was hard enough to crack. The interview has the biggest one where I have to face the selection board and during the interview, I have realized that the institution really works hard on their students as the questions were to evaluate the seriousness of the student towards studies and his professional life which he/she will lead after passing out. I could sense that they are equally contributing making us aware that it's not only getting admission but a journey of 2 yrs with the institution. I had prepared for the GD and interview on my own with the help of my known ones who has also done MBA but the involvement of the selection board was not on the admission of the student in their institution but on the overall development of a career.
