A review on IIT Dhanbad

IIT Dhanbad is a well-respected college and excels in mining and petroleum-related branches. The mainstream branches are also well established. The admission process is through JEE Advanced scores and is conducted by JOSAA. Students are required to fill all the colleges they want to take admission in preference order. Options like Float, Freeze and Slide are to be chosen. There are 7 rounds of the admission process. In every round, a seat is allotted. Students have to choose what they would like to do with the seat. Freeze means they want to take the allotted seat and does not want to participate in consecutive rounds. Float means they took the allotted seat but want to participate further in consecutive rounds and wait for better seats according to the preference order provided by them. I chose Mechanical Engineering because I had a genuine interest in it and IIT Dhanbad has a very established mechanical department. The faculty-student ratio is 1:24 approximately. The faculty is very helpful and very learned as well. All of them have done their PhD from IITs. If you want to do research and development in Mechanical engineering then the IIT Dhanbad faculty has lots of resources to help the students. The mechanical department lab has very expensive machines for R&D. Students from Mechanical engineering of IIT Dhanbad have excelled in GATE examinations with acquiring AIR in the top 10. This year too out of the top 10, 3 were from IIT Dhanbad. With over 20 years of teaching experience, the faculty here can make you understand the hardest of topics with the easiest of methods. Term exams are of moderate difficulty but if one has attended all the lectures then one can pass with ease. Studying on the night of the exam for the first time will never help you pass any exam ever.

Pre-placement offers to begin in December for students who are in the 7th semester. and the placement season is till May after the 8th semester. Companies have a different eligibility criterion. To be on the safe side try keeping your OGPA above 6.5. Relative grading is followed here so eligibility with GPA above 8 is very uncommon. The highest package was offered by Microsoft with 23 students getting 43.5 LPA. The average package is around 10 - 12 LPA. Each company on average offers job to 2-3 students. The percentage of a student placed is almost 70%. As the other 30% wants to do higher education. There is a Management department here so most students opt for an MBA course after completing their degree.

The fees are quite high if you are a General candidate with a yearly family income of more than 5 lakhs. The fees are as follows: Tution fees 100000 Mess fees 15000 other accommodations fees 8000 to 9000 depending on winter and monsoon semester. For a general candidate with a family income less than 5 lakhs per annum, 66% of tution fees are waived off but all the other fees are the same. For SC/ST candidates 100% of tution fees is waived off. From this year the tution fees are hiked to 1,20,000 with all other fees being the same. For living expense like buying stationeries and laundry services 1000-2000 per month is enough. And a semester goes on for 4 months approximately. Scholarships are also provided for students having 7 Gpa and above and an annual family income of fewer than 6 lakhs per annum. The name of this scholarship is Merit cum means scholarship and is awarded every year to approximately 200-300 students.

IIT Dhanbad conducts the technical fest in October before the midterm exams. The cultural fest is held in the 1st week of February. The library here is the largest open library in Asia so it contains thousands of books and many copies of the same book so that many students can check out the same book if they want to. The library has soundproof halls so that student can fully focus on their students. Each study table has its own port for laptops. The library is well lit everywhere and isn't very far from the hostels. The classroom has security cameras and gallery-like seating arrangements so that a student seating at the end of the class can see the board clearly. Each classroom is equipped with a projector for visual teaching. Sports are given a lot of priority here. We have 2 football size fields and a badminton court in every block of every hostel. For indoor games, an entire building is dedicated. Clubs here are for everyone and the official website is run by the student body.

Each room has 2 students in it and the room is spacious enough for 3. There are separate ports for each student. There is a LAN port which gives unlimited and fast internet access. Separate beds and a joint wardrobe are provided. Meal quality is different in different hostels. The meal is quite good with non-veg 2 to 3 times a week. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians eat on different floors. In desserts, sweets and milk are provided. In every semester a day is chosen on which special dinner is given and this dinner is very lavish and tasty. The registration process for hostels is quite simple. On the admission, day visits your hostel and submit the application form which is to be done on the IIT official website. They will give you your key to the room and the first student in each room gets to choose which side of the room they want to have. No need to get worried about affordability because IIT Dhanbad has enough rooms for every student.
