IIT ISM DHANBAD-An overview digitally

In order to secure a seat in IIT ISM DHANBAD in Computer Science Engineering, one needs to secure a minimum rank of around 3000 in the General category(though for female and reserved candidates, the minimum rank could be around 6000) in Jee Advanced. One can easily avail a seat in the other most popular branch in ISM i.e mining engineering that takes candidates up to 20K rank too. The seat allocation procedure for IIT ISM DHANBAD is done by the JOSAA Counselling. Last year in 2020, the process was completely online due to the pandemic. Students needed to upload all the required documents through the Josaa portal.There was no physical verification as such since it has been deferred, unlike the previous years.

The Chemical Engineering department has been established in 2011, almost a decade ago in IIT ISM Dhanbad. This branch provides a plethora of opportunities in the chemical processes and most of the other energy-based industries. Though its one of the emerging branches in India, it provides wonderful opportunities in most of the foreign countries. The student-to-teacher ratio is fairly good(1:30). The proffessors are from renowned institutions like IIT Kanpur, IIT khaargapur, etc. They apprise us with numerous research activities and industrial interactions.Plant visits are made compulsory in our undergraduate curriculum to have good perception until this online academic year. Additionally, they also help us prepare for higher studies and competitive exams like GATE. The examination are conducted twice for each semester(mid sem and end sem).For the ongoing pandemic situation, the mid sem exam has been fragemented into for quizes(objective) followed by the subjective end semester examination.

Even though the internships have been hit tremendously by Corona, the institute has done fairly well in obtaining internships for the students digitally. There are a number of research projects offered by tata steel,ongc, and other It companies too. Additionally, renowned companies like Google, Microsoft, Mckinset are coming for internship opportunities here.

The students in the pre-final year become eligible for the PPOs and the BTech students in a final year i.e fourth year appear for the placements. A total of 700 students have been placed on campus by the top companies like Microsoft, Adobe, Deloitte, ONGC, GAIL, etc. 142 students have applied for higher studies and almost 94% of students appear in the on-campus placements. This year two CSE students have done performed exceptionally well by bagging securing 90lpa and 81 LPA in Bloomberg, London. A total of 144 companies have registered for the placements.

The fees for undergraduate BTech students are around 1lakh (tuition fees) and after adding other charges like a hostel, mess fees comes to around 1.3lakhs. A number of scholarships and financial aid are provided to economically weak students. MCM scholarships and other fee waiver policies are availed to underprivileged students.

All the fests have been conducted online this year but this didn't dampen the spirit of the ISM students. There was active online participation in Hackathons, Literary Fests, etc. As the students are unable to utilize the Central Library facilities, the institute has offered an e-library in which most of the contents are available in digital format. The classes are conducted through the Zoom platform. It's challenging to teach and understand the in-depth concepts of academics through digital windows but the institute has done marginally well in producing some essences of classroom learning in this form of teaching.

As such, the students of batch 2020 have been unlucky in this sphere to enter the campus and reside in the institute's hostel since the pandemic. Although, the seniors do mention the thrilling hostel life. The food provided is fairly well in a mess though students tend to eat in the cafeterias present in the premises. The institute offers hostel facilities to all in the undergraduate program except the local students who are already residing in the city.
