Remarks
Had applied to various other colleges such as NIT Jamshedpur, BIT Mesra, NIT Nagpur, NIT Allahabad, NIT Raipur, and other private engineering colleges. But I preferred IIEST, Shibpur to others because of the ranking, infrastructure and other placement criteria. I had not availed of any quota. The minimum marks required was 140+ out of 360 and the age was 18. The admission process was hectic as we had to run all day on the day of admission. But overall, it was a good experience.
Course Curriculum Overview
The reason behind choosing this course was my sheer interest in the field of mining The student ratio is pretty much decent 1:31. The faculty is great will all their experience and knowledge. The term exams are meant to be difficult, but they really boost the conceptual knowledge we possess.
Internships Opportunities
Internship offering companies are Vedanta Pvt Ltd, Tata Steel, Texas Co, CESC, Microsoft, Amazon, Wells Fargo, Aditya Birla Group etc. The roles were that of a GET. And the projects undertaken were given by the companies themselves.
Placement Experience
Placement scenarios in this college are pretty much decent. Attracting both core and non core companies gives a very fair placement percentage. The students can start applying for internships for the 3rd year itself. And the number of offers matches the number of internships. The number of companies visiting the campus is above 100. And the offers made are about 500. The highest package is given by Microsoft 39 lpa while the lowest is offered by Cognizant Solutions 4 LPA. The percentage of students getting place pre covid scenario crossed 60 but had reduced during the covid era. My plans after getting the degree are to take up a job and earn.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure is based on all the NITs. But alas, there are no opportunities for campus jobs. But there is an alumni association that gives scholarships to meritorious students every year. GAABESU gives great amounts of funds to students excelling in different spheres of their college tenure.
Campus Life
The campus life is really awesome. The tech fest INSTRUO held in the month of October is the largest fest of Kolkata and REBECA, the annual fest held in April is the oldest fest in India. The library hosts a huge number of books which are a rich source of journals, books, research papers and humanities. It's a central library system which is open for 18 hours per day. The well equipped AC classrooms have all the facilities provided. College hosts Annual Athletic Meets, and other inter-hostel sports meet. Also participates in inter-NIT sports festivals. A number of clubs for dance, music, literature, robotics, quiz, social services, debates, coding are run by the students
Hostel Facilities
The hostels are really spacious and amazing, they provide multi-storied buildings with elevators and other safety facilities. The menu accommodates all types of food for all students coming from different corners of the country. And it is great. The registration process is extremely easy and takes place during the admissions itself and the room is a spacious one with beds, study tables, chairs, a wardrobe and lamps.
