Remarks
IITM is one of the most prestigious institutions of the country, holding NIRF Rank 1 for the past few years consecutively. I chose IITM because it is close to Bangalore, my city of residence. IITM has a flexible curriculum with ample opportunities for everyone to explore their interests.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course because that is what my rank allowed. Chemical engineering is a relatively lightweight course as compared to others, and this provides ample time for other activities. There are 32 assistant, associate and full term professors in the department of chemical engineering. They are highly qualified and experienced, with most of them having done their doctorates and postdocs from prestigious institutions abroad. They conduct high quality research and this provides an avenue to students to explore their interests in research.
Placement Experience
Placements are excellent in IITM. Many top companies come here to recruit right on Day 1 of placements. Final year students are eligible to sit for placements. Some companies include Microsoft, Rubrik, Uber, Samsung and many more. Around 70-80% of students get placed. Packages range from 6 to 34 LPA. Many profiles are offered, like core, management, etc.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The tuition fee is around 1,00,000 per semester. The mess and hostel accommodation is around 30,000 per semester. There are various loans that students of a weaker financial background can take. More information can be found on the IITM website.
Campus Life
The annual tech fest of IITM is called Shaastra and the annual cultural fest is called Saarang. Both of them are completely run and managed by students, and Saarang is India's largest student run cultural fest. Both of them are normally held in January, right before the start of the spring semester. There is a central library with a vast collection of all kinds of books. Classrooms are well equipped, with most of them having large blackboards and projectors. The campus is mostly lush green, and there are many opportunities for sports like tennis, volleyball etc. Groups like Centre for Innovation (CFI) are completely student run.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are old, but they are good enough, with maintenance and cleaning being done everyday. Freshers normally get double rooms and are later shifted to single rooms. Every student is a hosteller by default and if one wishes to become a day scholar, the administration must be informed. All hostels are located on campus.
