Entrance Preview
You have to take AIEEE or WBJEE to be in this college. For AIEEE the seats fill out fast while for WBJEE you have to rank within 1000 in the state. For computer science the closing rank can be 400 at max. In East India the best college is obviously IITKgp followed by both Jadavpur University & IIEST. Also IIEST is more than 150 yrs old having established in 1856 (2nd oldest engineering college in India).
Course Curriculum Overview
The course is pretty good. Never had any problem in understanding and coping up with the industry later on. However certain subjects could have been taught in details like Image Processing where a particular student might have more interest. However the core like THOC, Microprocessor, DBMS, Programming are covered in details extensively.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, but at bachelors we do not have something as Internship. Though I would use to stay back during vacations for project work. Though it would be a yearlong process but its the vacation when you spend your time and energy focused on the project devoid of the normal coursework. Though I have seen students coming from other colleges from South, West India and they get stipends, but never asked them as such.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are lots of scholarships available for economically struggling people. Some which can cover up the expense of probably 2-3 students. I personally got a scholarship of about 20K for being a model student.
Campus Life
Campus Life is pretty good, peaceful. Gender ratio is not that good as unfortunately we do not have many girls in engineering. Its good only in CS section with 6 girls in a class of 60. In other branches apart from IT the ratio is too low. Robotics was a defining event and there were lots of extracurricular clubs as Literature Club, Drama Club, Music Dance Club, Photography Club.
Exam Structure
Life is very hectic. 3 labs a week consume a lot of the time. Also there are semester exams and mid-sems. In between you have to work for your project and pursue your hobby (Ex- I was involved with Robotics Club and Microsoft Student partner work in 2nd yr, In 3rd Yr had to squeeze out time to complete another Image processing project with Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata).
Faculty
There are specific teachers to handle some tricky subjects. Pretty qualified teachers who have industry experience (ex- microprocessor taught by the dean who worked at Intel, taught by an expert with researches in the field, designing of Mini-Compiler as part of course). Also publishing of research paper is mandatory for top students in journals and IEEE.
