Remarks
From the beginning I was keen to get into the prestigious colleges of Delhi University. In the first cut off I got admission in Deen Dayal Upadhyay College for mathematics. But I wanted Statistics which was there only in very few colleges. Then atlast I got admission for statistics hons in Sri Venkateswara College which is ranked in top 3 for the subject. There is a percentage relaxation of 1-2% if you have a category. The admission criteria is that 10+2 with maths as the core subject. Even while calculating the Best of four percentage one should keep in mind to include both English and Maths score along with any two subjects of your choice. The admission process was a bit inconvenient as they do not allow guardians inside the college so if accompanying anyone is a bad idea as they will have to wait outside. Rest of the process was smooth, just keep all the necessary documents with you.
Course Curriculum Overview
Statistics is a beautiful combination of Maths and programming languages and I had a great interest in both. It is the best course to conquer in this data world. The faculty student ratio is perfect as there are around only 40 students in the class whereas, in mathematics, it has triple the number of students. Every professor in the department is a PhD holder but rarely do some guest lecturers come in who are less qualified. But the efforts every person puts in teaching us is immense. Even during the pandemic the term exams and results weren't delayed even a bit except for one unavoidable time. Punctuality was always the key of Delhi University which saved us students from anxiety.
Internships Opportunities
The companies that came for internships were AirIndia, Flipkart, White Hat Jr, Deloitte, KPMG, Sapio Analytics and the list goes on.Most of the companies that offered internship in the college were startups mostly looking for marketing interns which weren't related to statistics field. So very less students took up the opportunities. But every week atleast one internship opportunity is posted up on the group.
Placement Experience
Our college has a very active placement cell which keeps conducting seminars and every now and then internship opportunities are posted on the official groups for the students to check. I have seen maximum placement opportunities for Maths, Economics, Bcom, Statistics, English, Physics but yes there used to come many placement opportunities for in general all the course. The percentage of students placed are not that high but they do provide a decent package for each of them. The highest salary package offered was 18-19 lakhs per annum by the DE Shaw company.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure was very affordable and the college also provided fee reimbursements and scholarships for students coming from economically weaker families. In the three years of my college life there wasn't any significant fee hike and even then there was no compromise for the quality of education provided. There was an Internship fair conducted in the first year of college which gave us a good experience unfortunately none of the students of first year got an internship through it. So it is always advisable to look for internships from outside college.
Campus Life
The most celebrated annual fest of Delhi University, Nexus, is a three day event consisting of music, dance, food and what not. Conducted in the end of February every year they invite upon musical bands and playback singers which add up to the total fun. Apart from the annual fests, there are department fests and tech fests which gives more opportunities to get involved with everyone. The campus life is also fun despite the fact that the campus area is comparatively much smaller than any other north campus colleges. Library is a well maintained one with almost every book you need. But the highlight of the college is the ground which gives enough of opportunities for a sports enthusiasts. There are also societies and social groups which eventually converted to a society, for example, the Boolean society, which was an initiative started by the students of statistics department and later converted to a society.
