Entrance Preview

'West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination' is the required entrance examination for entry in Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course (Mechanical Engineering) was overall good. The first year is based on general engineering subjects. nd and 3rd year are pure departmental subjects and 4th year is mix of departmental, industrial and environmental studies. It is in general not research focused, but fulfills the engineering requirements.

Internships Opportunities

No, college does not provide internship. Instead they provide vocational training from different companies which is mostly stipend less.

Placement Experience

3

Almost 75% to 80% students were placed in campus recruitment. Companies like Larsen & Toubro, Blue Star, Tega, West Bengal Power Development Corp. Ltd., Hind Motor etc came. Some software companies like Cognizant and TCS also recruits mechanical students. At 2013, the average CTC offered by those companies were nearly Rs. 3.5 lakh.

College Events

4.5

Technical Festival (Tech Fest) is organised once in a year, which runs about 3-4 days. A huge number of students from JGEC as well as other college participates in different technical events like robotics, coding, computer gaming etc. A lot of cultural festivals are organised in different times of the year. The cultural festivals are very nice and the main cultural festival is the biggest in the whole North-Bengal.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is very much feasible. Tuition fee in only Rs. 500/- per month for Mechanical, Rs. 1000/- per month for Computer Science and Engineering and Rs. 2000/- per month for Information Technology. For other streams, it in between Rs. 500/- to Rs.1000/- So, it is not at all expensive.

Fees and Financial Aid

I personally do not know about any loan facility offered by the college. But they do provide scholarship like half or full free of tuition fee for the students belonging to needy family.

Campus Life

3

In streams like Mechanical and Civil, there is very poor gender ratio, maybe less than 30% girls. Rest of the streams are okay in gender ratio, but not good. There is huge scope for extracurricular activities and sports. JGEC have one dedicated club for robotics.

Hostel Facilities

4

Hostels rooms are in between okay to good. Beds, tables, chairs and cupboards are available they are mostly on sharing basis. 3 to 4 students share a single room for first to third year, but in the fourth year students get single room or room shared by 2 persons. Most of the students stay in hostels, very less in PG.

Alumni/Alumna

Yes, the alumni network is strong and quite helpful. JGEC has a very big alumni network. The alumni senior students take a lot of participation on social occasions.

Exam Structure

The four course consists of 8 semesters. All semester exams has 6-8 papers and 3-4 practice/lab. Previously JGEC was under WBUT. After being autonomous in 2012, JGEC making its own question papers. Papers are not easy, but moderate and based on syllabus.

Faculty

3.5

Most of the teachers are very kind, knowledgeable and helpful. They are enough qualified and very interested in teaching. But the faculty lacks in strength. In most of the streams, the available strength of professors are much less than the allotted numbers.

I don't have idea about the placements since I'm in first year now. But I talked to a senior and got to know that many got multiple offers in 4th year. I also head that packages are around 4 lpa which is a decent and also a rise than the previous year.

Placement Experience:

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

Placement Experience:

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

It's my decision from class 12 that I will do civil engineering, so I chose the civil branch, the course curriculum is well and the teaching level is good but the main problem is lab, there is very limited classes for lab, so I think they should improve there.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
