Remarks
I had applied to Delhi University, Shri Shikshayatan College, and Bhawanipur College, Kolkata. While I didn't take admission in DU due to its eligibility criteria of giving Hons subject to those who had maths in class 12 (I didn't). And I chose Goenka College over Shri Shikshayatan and Bhawanipur because of better reviews. I am a general category student and thought that my chances of getting into Goenka is very less. However, I got in somewhere around the 8th list. The admission criteria were quite simple. 1. Minimum marks (in H.S. or equivalent 10+2 examination) required for online application: a) For Unreserved Category: 75% in aggregate and 60% in any of the subjects. For Reserved Category: 10% relaxation in marks for OBC-A & OBC-B and 25%. relaxation in marks for SC & ST. After the issue of name in the merit list, you just have to deposit the admission fee and print the receipt (the process was online due to the pandemic).
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose to pursue B.com Hons because of it's practical curriculum. Our college faculty is good enough and most of the professors are experienced and have a PHD. While coping with the online mode has been difficult for them as well, but they try to give their best to the teaching. To be honest, they aren't the best with regards to being friendly with the students. But maybe this is because of digital education, things may get better when we go for offline classes in November. 2nd year is a lot better than first year as the faculty is more polite and concerned. We have semester exams every 6 months and internal exams a month before semester exams. The papers are MCQ based except for the Hons paper (For e.g. Cost Accounting in Sem 2) and therefore they are relatively easier to crack.
Internships Opportunities
Since the college revolves around commerce and business, a lot of marketing and commerce related companies offer internship opportunities here. I think 90% of these internships are related to sales and hence the Stipend is based on it.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for campus placement in their final year. The College has a well-developed Placement cell which takes care of the placement of the students. In the last 3 years, around 90 students got placed in reputed corporate houses. With a view to preparing the students for the job market, the College maintains a Guidance and Counselling Cell. Around 300 students got the benefit of this cell during the last 3 years. Reputed companies like Wipro come to recruit students here. I planned to appear for CAT instead of taking a job after B.Com hons. An MBA degree will obviously increase the worth and job application.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees are quite reasonable with Rs.1300 being the yearly fee. It is affordable to most students out there. The college provides 90% placement and companies like Wipro recruit students from the college.
Campus Life
Since we have experienced most things in online mode, it is difficult to rate the overall campus experience. However, when the pandemic didn't arrive, our college used to have a grand fest every year which used to attract most of the youth from Kolkata. This will resume when the pandemic settles down. There's a student union run by seniors and the admins help a lot in solving issues. They conduct several debates, extempore, etc once in a while. Apart from all this, the college conducts programs on occasions such as Independence day with a lot of extracurricular activities.
