Good college with nice placement and a beautiful environment full of cultural activities

Admission was based on Wbjee Exam 2020. Although many took admission through decentralized counseling later. I secured a rank of 7552 in WBJEE and filled the choice list accordingly. Like, everyone, my first choice was also Jadavpur University, and my Second choice was Kalyani Government Engineering College but my low rank and being from the general category didn't go in favor of my choice. Until the last round, I was allotted a seat in IT (Information Technology) at Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Serampore. Finally, on 24th October 2020, the final round seat allotment was released and I got the seat in JGEC Mechanical. The total admission process went digitally due to Covid and I didn't have any problem following the mentioned steps, paying admission fees, and completing my admission procedure.

I chose this course because JGEC is a very old and renowned institute established in the early 1960s. Maximum faculty members of the Mechanical Department are well experienced and professional at their teaching. Most of the professors have Ph.D. degrees and are experts at their niche, they have unique ways of teaching and are quite interactive with the students, they refer to exact books which are quite beneficial. They focus on practicals as well as theory-practical go hand in hand in engineering. Overall our college has some of the best faculties for the Mechanical stream in the entire West Bengal. Our department has a healthy faculty: student ratio of 10:3. Our Semester and Mid-Sem Internals are taken timely and are evaluated with great precision, getting marks is not at all easy if concepts are not cleared. Also, students are required to submit timely assignments as part of their academics.

In the last 3-4 years companies have started offering internships for 5th sem onwards students for a variety of roles like AI, Machine Learning, Web Development, and several other technical fields for core students.

The placement of JGEC has improved a lot in recent 3-4 years. Students from the 5th sem onwards become eligible for placements and internships. Several top companies visited the campus this year(2021):- Infosys-32 Cognizant-55 Wipro-7 Accenture-8 Hexaware technologies-2 GFG-1 JP Morgan-1 TCS-58 Tata Power-2 ITD Cementation-6 Markle Sokrati-2 and several others For IT Companies Highest Package on campus was 10 LPA ( role of SDE ) and an average of 4.5 LPA. Highest Package offered on Campus for Core Company was 7 lpa and average of 3 LPA 90% of students got placement from non-core branches. For core branches it was 60% for EE and 50% for ME and CE.

Our college has one of the lowest fees structure in the entire West Bengal. For Mechanical / Electrical / Civil Stream it is just RS 38,000 for 4 years which is quite less compared to others. For TFW candidates the fees are even lower. Scholarship: Students can apply for all sorts of available scholarships like the Swami Vivekananda Scholarship, Aikyashree Scholarship, NSP, etc. Apart from these, there are about 20+ scholarships for each year students started and funded by the Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College Alumni Association based on merit. Many 3rd year students have started getting internships and placement. I am presently in my 2nd year expecting to apply for internships towards the end of the 4th semester.

The annual tech fest of JGEC is SHRISTI held in the month of February-March. It is one of the most famous tech fests of North Bengal. Different colleges across West Bengal come to participate. Apart from cultural functions, the specialty of this fest is Hackathon and Robo Wars, students present their prepared models. Other small fests such as JECLET, DEPICTA, etc are held on occasions like Viswakarma Puja. Our magazine is full of essential books with the capacity of 10,000+ from semester books to books for competitive exams like GATE. Students participate in inter-college sports and had won several prizes through the years. The clubs of JGEC are quite active namely DnC( Coders Club), CFI (Centre for Innovation) the technical club, Pandulipi ( Magazine Club), EDC (Entrepreneurship and Development Cell), GDSC (Google Developers Club), Calliphony(Music Club), etc.
