IIT ISM - Review

The admission is through IIT JEE Advanced Examination. The cutoff rank for this branch was very low and one can easily get this even after scoring 30-35% marks. There were no age barrier and in my year one of the youngest girl candidates got admission into this branch and she was just 15. The admission process is quite smooth, we have to just fill choices in josaa and after seat allotment, we have to finally visit the IIT and verify our documents.

Placements were good in this branch once even touching 100% but now it has seen a sharp decline and students look for other fields like consulting, coding, etc. Student to faculty ratio is quite good as the batch size is not big. Faculties are highly qualified with MTech and PhDs from highly reputed institutes like NITs and IITs but the teaching methodology is quite old and obsolete. Terms exams are on time, they are not tough to pass but one has to put some efforts consistently to be able to score good CGPA.

Getting Internships is a difficult task on campus. Almost all major tech giants visit the campus like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. roles offered were mainly of a software developer with a stipend as high as 2lakhs offered by sprinkler.

Companies began to visit the campus from starting of the 5th sem for internship and from the 7th sem for final placement. Tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle, DE Shaw, etc visit the campus and recruit a good amount of students from circuital branches. For earth science branches there has been a decline in the core companies especially PSUs. Consulting companies like Axxela, Futures First, Cubastion, etc also visit the campus for hiring. Some well-known PSUs like Cairn, ONGC, ExxonMobil, Mecon come for hiring for petro and AGP, AGL students The highest package last year was 93 lakh by Bloomberg London and the profile which was offered is Software Developer. Avg package is 9-10lakhs. Percentages of students placed vary from year to year but are roughly around 70-80%.

The fee depends upon category and family income. For SCs and ST candidates tuition fee is waived off completely they have to pay only a mess fee ( 15000 per sem) and approx. 7k for hostel and other stuff. For general candidates, fee waiver is given on the basis of annual family income. MCM scholarship is given to the deserving candidates who belong to the weaker section which offers them complete fee waiver. Job opportunities on campus are too much one has to learn other skills to be job-ready. The stipend provided on campus varies from 40000 to 60000 for an internship. For placement, it is around 9-10 lakhs.

The annual fest is Srijan conducted in February and Tech fest is Concerto conducted in September. The best thing about ISM is its library. The library is fully furnished and contains thousands of books on a vast range of topics. You can just relax and study as much as you can. The classroom is okayish with no ACs. Class sizes are quite small unlike we see in Top IITs. Sports and other extracurricular activities are good. There are two grounds upper and lower ground for cricket and athletics, there is also a Basketball court. Facilities are also available for badminton, chess, and squash. There is a swimming pool also. There are a plethora of clubs in the college promoting different activities in the college for instance- Chayanika Sangh, Abhay Dramatics Club(ADC), LITC, We the Crew, Fotofreaks, etc. Student Gymkhana is also there to cater to the issues of the students.

Rooms here are quite small with two sockets and one cupboard along with one LAN port. It is a double sharing room with two beds and one hanger along with a window, fan, and one tube light. The meal is quite okayish Non- veg food is provided along with veg on separate floors. One will get chicken curry three times a week, egg curry once a week, fish curry once a week. Special food is provided at some festivals. One can easily survive here in 5000 monthly.
