NIT Rourkela college life, curriculum and placement

This has been one of the most well established institute for quite a long time now. Other factors include quality of faculty and education. The opportunities and exposure they provide to the students. I reviewed this college from other websites such as careers360.com before taking admission.

I always had this desire to put my curiosity to good use. So i decided to pursue engineering from a good institute. I am currently a student of Metallurgical and materials engineering here and have always liked the way our curriculum was designed and delivered to us. Faculty ratio is 1:12. The faculty is quite experienced and all of them well versed in their respective fields. Interactive sessions, laboratories and doubt sessions are conducted regularly. Exams are conducted in two phases. Mid semester exam which accounts for 30% of total grade and end semester exam is 50%. Rest 20% are TA grades. Overall its a balanced structure neither too difficult nor too easy.

5th semester students are contacted by placement co-ordinators regarding CV creation and getting them ready for upcoming internship season. Later they are eligible to go for on campus placements given students must not have any backlog. Companies visiting the campus change a little bit every year but companies like flipkart and TATA have also been to the campus. Average package offered is about 8-9 lacs pa. I want to go for higher studies currently preparing for GATE.

Fee hike is not much significant and as i mentioned earlier the total four year cost is around 4.3 lacs. Multiple scholarships are available based on students family income, or academic basis. Some scholarships are offered from alumni fund. Talking about campus jobs, i don't have much idea about that since i haven't explored that part much.

Cultural fest - NITR Utsav (Februrary) Tech fest - Innovision (November) There is a central library where we can issue books free of cost for limited time after which student has to return the book. Most types of books and journals are available. Classrooms have capacity of about 100-120 students integrated with blac and white boards and projectors. For extracurricular there are teams in all kinds of sports(indoors and outdoors). One can appear for inductions when it starts. Also there are number of clubs which one can join to work upon their specific talent. For example there is a literary club called "Litrabuzz". They conduct literary events such as writing, speaking sessions, GDs etc.

Hostels are compulsory in NIT Rourkela. The facilities are upto the mark. 2 people accomodation, big enough room with study table. Water coolers are available on each floor of hostel. Mess has great food(Great variety and quality for both veg and non veg). There are volleyball and badminton courts in every hostel. A common area with television and indoor sport boards such as table tennis, chess etc. Canteen in each hostel is also available.

For admission only JEE Main's score is considered. Based on that student fills the department choices in counselling form. And over the period of 1 or 1.5 month 6 rounds of counselling results are released in which seats are alloted on the basis of ranking of the students.
