Remarks
Most of the students don't have a fair idea about which field they want to pursue. The selection of top colleges is mainly done on the basis of one's rank. I preferred choosing an old IIT, because of the reputation they hold which provides in more opportunities in terms of placements and learning across other domains. IIT Madras, old IITs for that matter have a very engaging student body activities which allows one to grow not only academically but even otherwise. One of the key aspects that is missed out while selecting the college is the growth in your personality that will take place. The amount of freedom that you will get and amount of opportunities that you will get (other than your chosen academic domain) should also be one of the key criteria's.
Course Curriculum Overview
The faculty is highly reputed across the world. Though the pedagogy followed by many faculties is still very traditional and could be improved. The overall course curriculum is well designed and academics is hectic only during the final year (if you are a Dual Degree Student).
Internships Opportunities
One internship is compulsory as a part of the curriculum. The internship opportunities are not as good as placements, but still some lucrative options are there which a handful of students are able to grab.
Placement Experience
There are plenty of job opportunities available, though most of the attracted jobs are in the IT sector. Not much attractive pays are offered in traditional engineering jobs. Some opportunities are available in the management sector as well.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The latest overall tuition fees is approximately 2,60,000. The hostel and mess fees is approximately 60,000 per year. Partial waiver in tuition fees is given is the family income is less than 5 Lakhs and complete waiver is given if the family income is less than 1 Lakh. The students from SC and ST category don't have to pay any tution fees. There are a couple of Merit scholarships that are provided by alumni's and organizations like Aditya Birla which can cover some part of your tution fees. I was lucky to get a job of 27lpa , though I decided to go for an MBA.
Campus Life
The campus life at IIT Madras is one of the best across the countries. Students hace lot of freedom to explore their interests and there a lot of clubs (almost everything) to pursue your extra-curricular interests. All the fests are completely student run, and the budget for all student body activities (including hostel activities) are managed by student elected representatives. The hostel infrastructure is good overall, the washrooms can be improved and sometimes Monkeys on campus can cause you some serious trouble !!
