Remarks
Getting into IITs was my prime goal after my higher secondary graduation. IIT BHU, ranked 11th position amongst the top engineering institutes by the NIRF Ranking 2020. Since, the institution complied with my further ambitions, I decided to get into this university for my Electrical Engineering studies. The application procedure was transparent and simple. Details like SSC and HSC score, scholarship application, participation in extra curriculars and JEE mains and advanced scores were some of the mandatory sections to fill. The opening rank cutoff for electrical engineering is 3727 for females and 2340 for the gender-neutral category while the closing rank stands at 5239 for females and 3016 for the gender-neutral category. However, for reserved castes like SC/ST, the cutoff remains liberal. After being shortlisted, I got the call from the IIT executive for counselling and solving my doubts. He gave the in-depth details like scholarships, campus rules, fees procedures and security deposits.
Course Curriculum Overview
The first year in electrical engineering is all about studying the basics of mechanics, computing and electricity. And from the second year, the curriculum becomes specialized in the field of study. This curriculum includes topics and modules like Calculus, programming, Electrical transducers and measurements, DC Machines and transformers, Micropower and macro controller, Testing, commissioning and maintenance of electrical equipment, etc. The course was dynamic enough to fit in the projects along with the theoretical studies. In the subsequent year, students apply for a lot of summer internships. The teaching faculty is highly experienced and guide the candidates not only in their studies but also in internship placements and various research projects. The faculty-student ratio is 15:1. All the professors hold a PhD. Exams were conducted quarterly, while basic quizzes and unit terminals were conducted bi-monthly to ease up the syllabus
Placement Experience
The training and placement cell at IIT BHU helps the candidates in the training and job preparation in the final year. Companies like Oracle, Tata steel, EXL, Wipro and DMT visited the campus offering around 1500 positions. The job profiles include Power engineers, telecommunication engineers, control and instrumentation engineer, broadcast analyst, systems analyst. The annual CTC varies by the technicalities of the position offered. The highest placement offered was 1.3 crores while the average CTC stood at 75 lakhs. However, one should note that the companies have a preference of candidates with soft skills like communication and negotiation along with the technical skills of their respective fields.
Campus Life
The campus of IIT Varanasi is beautiful and showcases Indian Heritage. It was previously known as BENCO(Banaras Engineering College) specialized in mining and metallurgy. The campus life of students is fun and they learn a lot even outside the classroom. Not just that, we even had clubs for several extra-curricular activities like the Games and Sports Council, Cultural Science and Technology Council, Film and Media Council and the Social Service Council. It has a flagship intercollegiate annual festival Spandan, held in the month of February. It even has an institute magazine under the name of IIT-BHU Connect that writes about current affairs, advances in technology and other blogs.
