Remarks

Eligibility for B.Tech courses in IEM Kolkata: One has to appear for West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) , which is given by around 1.5 lac candidates and if one scores decent enough then he/she shall get a seat in this college. Cutoff varies every year . WBJEE Application forms are out by the end of January and one has to fill up the form from the official website.Application fees is Rs500 for General candidates and Rs400 for Resereved candidates The entire process of admission is divied into two parts ie, online and offline(for physical verification of the required documents) If the process becomes totally online that would be much hassle free for the students residing outside the state or living very far in the city. This process is followed for admission in colleges under JEE Mains and is happening for the past 5years without and chaos.

Course Curriculum Overview

2.5

I chose Mecahnical Engineering simply because of my love for this subject.Unlike others I hate coding and love those subjects which require visualisation and can help me to use my text book applications in real life. Student to faculty ratio is around 1:60 Most of the faculty members are M.Tech/PHD/MCA.Only a handful of them teach really good , like 1 out of 10 of them. They teach in a long hall which makes it difficult for the back benchers to see the backboard. Term exams are held 6 months. 1st semester is divided into mid-sem and end-sem. Further midsem is divided into midsem1 and midsem2. Similarly all the semsters for the rest of the duration of four years of the course are divied into two parts. The midsem exams are of 40 marks and the end sem exams are of 80 marks. The difficulty of the paper completely depends on the student as almost all the concepts and questions are thourouhly done in classes and included in class notes most of the time

Fees and Financial Aid

The fees hike is quite steady and predictable which is the only good part. Semester fees for each semester is Rs70000 (this does not include hostel/mess fees). No job/scholarship/financial assitance is offered by the college however one may get financial aid from the university to which IEM is affiliated to ie, MAKAUT

Campus Life

3

To experience a campus life you need a campus, and IEM lacks one. Its just a building on the roadside. Diversion if the annual tech fest that is conducted. The librabry is not upto the mark with very limited copies. There are no books beyond those which are required for the cirriculam. Classrooms are quite spacious with well ventilated windows. There are both projectors and whiteboads for the purpose of teaching .Every room is well equipped with CCTVs and fire alarms . There are also hand sanitizer stands outside every classroom. The sports facilities includes a full size basketball court,a badminton play area( its not literally a court, with just the badminton net on the ground). There are no circket pitch/football ground, however there is a small futsal pay area in the terrace for which we hardly get the permission to play in. There is a fused yoga and gym room which also has indoor games . Indoor games include billiards, table tennis and carrom.

Placement Experience:

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

Placement Experience:

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

It's my decision from class 12 that I will do civil engineering, so I chose the civil branch, the course curriculum is well and the teaching level is good but the main problem is lab, there is very limited classes for lab, so I think they should improve there.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
