DTU, B.Tech Environmental Engineering

Remarks

Good: 1. Beautiful campus, 2. One of the best places to study Mechanical Engineering, 3. Strong Alumni network, 4. Responsible admin. Bad: 1. Some Professors are really bad at teaching, 2. Need for advanced methods of teaching, 3. The placement cell ignores the non-core branches (read Environmental, Biotech, Physics, Automotive.

Entrance Preview

After securing a 21k rank in AIEEE, I had an option between NSIT and DTU. I chose B.Tech in Environmental Engineering at DTU as it stands as a much bigger brand. The picturesque campus with generous sports facilities worked for me.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The B.Tech curriculum for Environmental Engineering is one of the best in the country. The credit based system ensures that mastering harder courses benefits your overall score considerably. The course focuses on Water/wastewater Engineering, equipping students with industry as well as research based skills. The course-structure gels well with the Civil Engineering courses. One disadvantage is that the concept of electives is virtually non-existent.

Internships Opportunities

Again, talking specifically for Environmental Engineering, there are not a lot of opportunities but that is still a better situation than other colleges. Delhi helps you get access to a lot of industries and startups. There were some on-campus opportunities for internships in Environmental Engineering. Otherwise, you can always go for non-tech opportunities if you are not interested in Environmental Engineering.

Placement Experience

3.5

For Environmental Engineering, the situation was bad during my placement year. Around 3-4 companies came on-campus to recruit Environmental Engineers with really low packages (around 3-4lpa). Getting placed in on-campus Environmental firms is hard unless you have a stellar profile. Other students with average profiles grab equal packages if they are willing to search for off-campus jobs. Students interested to stay in Environmental do get jobs (again 3-4 lpa off-campus). If you are interested in higher packages, you would have to consider non-tech placements (Business Analyst profiles) or software jobs. Their pay packages are anywhere from 4-30 lpa (for B.A. profiles) and 6-25 (for Software jobs) but as you'll be competing with students from other branches, you'll face tough competition. Among the highest paying on-campus companies are Goldman Sachs, SAP labs, Flipkart, Futures First, Amazon, Honeywell, Bain and Co. (each with 10 lpa+ packages).

College Events

5

The Engifest (annual cultural fest) never fails to draw in the biggest stars from Music and Hindi Film Industry. There were some truly amazing fests during my 4 years of study. Some of the biggest names include Sunidhi Chauhan, Mohit Chauhan, Lagori, Acrid Semblance among many others. Also, the classes remain suspended for most part of the fest season, so yay! You won't be disappointed.

Fee Structure And Facilities

DTU is one of the cheapest Engineering colleges I have seen, even among the government colleges. I gave a yearly 59k fee while my seniors were giving 39k! That's almost nothing when you compare it to the 3 lakh fee at private universities. Although DTU has been increasing the fee every year, I am sure it would still be among the least expensive.

Fees and Financial Aid

There are scholarships every semester for the top two students in every branch. The topper and second topper get 10k and 5k respectively. Other than that, no major scholarships as such. Students using SC/ST quota have to pay negligible fee. You could easily get education loans from SBI.

Campus Life

4.5

The campus life is very enjoyable and was is a major advantage over the other top tier colleges. The gender ratio is better than most engineering colleges. With over 80% students from Delhi-NCR, there's not much debate about the economic status of the general crowd. DTU has a very competitive political culture, with students taking an active part in the Student Unions. There are numerous extracurricular activities in DTU. The sports facilities are abundant with very competitive badminton, cricket, football teams. The labs in my department were state-of-the-art. Mostly, the competitions happen during our tech-fest, but the college encourages participating in competitions elsewhere as well.

Hostel Facilities

3

One major disadvantage of DTU is the lack of hostel facilities. Most of the Delhi students don't end up getting hostels. Due to the lack of accommodation, all the rooms are on a sharing basis. Students end up utilizing the thriving PG culture which costs between 8-12k per month. It's marginally lower if you rent a flat and manage your food on your own. All three options come with their own set of pros and cons.

Alumni/Alumna

You will find our alumni excelling in almost every field. From the ever talented Sushant Singh Rajput to Paytm's founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, you can find us excelling in almost all fields. There is a dedicated and active online group for DTU Alumni which is the go-to place for networking and getting references for jobs.

Exam Structure

The exam structure is very relaxed as compared to other colleges. There is only a mid-semester and then an end-semester exam. So students can indulge in a lot of extra-curricular activities and tech teams to boost their skills. Also, the marking system has been changed to CGPA from percentage which is a huge relief for Mba and MS aspirants.

Faculty

3.5

The faculty is relatively relaxed and doesn't burden students with many assignments. The faculty is driven to guide the motivated students in the research and career pursuits. You can always count on the faculties on giving you the best recommendation letters. Focus areas of faculties are Water/Wastewater Engineering, Solid Waste Management, Air Quality, Instrumentation and Microbiology. All these areas have separate research labs with ongoing researches. Having said that, I would also mention that I had a bitter experience with my research mentor.

The placements of MAIT are decent as compared to market conditions. But the data shown on website or availble at various platforms is not the reality. The mass chunk of students who get a job are placed under and around 6LPA package.

Placements are good in DTU. Usually a student is eligible to sit in placements from 4th year. Last year 325+ companies visited the campus like google, abode, Amazon, Microsoft, zomato, samsung, maruti suzuki, etc. They all have made 2050+ offers. The highest domestic package was offered by Atlanssian of 82.05LPA. The overall average package was 16.71LPA. The average package of my branch (Production and Industrial Engineering) was 12.34LPA. And in tech branches like CSE, IT it was around 24-25 LPA. Almost everyone is allowed to sit for placements. In PIE branch around 60-65% of student got placed in on campus.
