Remarks
The college management is very good. They quickly respond in case there arises any problem or issue in the campus.
Entrance Preview
I took NEST (National Entrance Screening Test) and got AIR around 250. I opted for this particular institute because I was interested in research and NISER is one of the best national institutes for the research.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am a Physics student. So, I can only assess the course curriculum of Physics. The School of Physical Sciences is in pursuit of excellence in research and in teaching. It is engaged in very active research in the frontier areas. Physics of the macro world and micro world are being vigorously explored. Following are the major areas of research: Condensed Matter Physics, Experimental High Energy Physics, Theoretical Physics, String Theory, Ultra-cold atoms & Quantum optics, Non Linear Optics, Quantum information, computation and simulation, Mesoscopic superconductivity, Nanofabrication and Photonics, Statistical Mechanics and Interdisciplinary Applications. The course curriculum is good.
Internships Opportunities
Yes. It provides a monthly stipend of Rs 5000 to every M.Sc student via scholarship. Yearly scholarship of 20000 is also given for doing summer projects.
Placement Experience
Most of the students get placed in good foreign universities for Ph.D. Some also get placements in BARC and DRDO. Some also join reputed Indian universities like IISC, HRI, IITs, IISERs and other research institutes for higher studies. Overall, most students go for Ph.D. after M.Sc.
College Events
The students of NISER hold an annual cultural festival called Udbhava, usually in the months of September/October. Many activities like fashion show, Abhivyakti a street dance competition where some of the best dancer and dancing group take part from all over Odisha, General Quiz show, debates and discussion on current issues are held.
Fee Structure And Facilities
NISER follows what one generally calls credit based semester system. It is, therefore, mandatory for each student to register the courses at the beginning of each semester on the prescribed dates announced in the Academic Calendar, till he/she completes the program. You need to pay 10k per semester as registration fees.
Fees and Financial Aid
All admitted students of M.Sc. will receive a scholarship of Rs. 5,000/- per month ( as determined from time to time ), from the INSPIRE programme of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. Students can avail KVPY fellowships also. In addition students are entitled to receive summer internship grant of Rs 20,000/-(as determined from time to time)) annually to facilitate their academic pursuits.
Campus Life
A student should keep in mind that the hostel is the home of the students on the campus, he/she should behave himself/herself on the campus as well as outside in such manner that will bring credit to him/her and above all to the institution. Internal victimization or harassment of anyone who is from a weaker/minority section will not be tolerable and will be treated as a serious offense. It will be strictly dealt with by Hostel Management committee. All games/ sports activity in the hostels must have the prior approval of the Hostel Management committee. Every dept has good good research level labs.
Hostel Facilities
It is decided to have 2 boys and 2 girls from M.Sc. integrated program and 1 boy and 1 girl from P.G. Program to be, at present, included in the Hostel Management Committee. The composition may change from time to time. Single rooms are provided to 4th and 5th year M.Sc students while double sharing rooms are allocated to first three year students.
Alumni/Alumna
Yes, seniors and alumni are very helpful. They will continuously guide you throughout the course. You can ask any doubts from them. I had many alumni and seniors that helped me guiding throughout my five years.
Exam Structure
A student must have 80% attendance in order to be eligible to sit for the end-semester examination. It is emphasized that the Institute follows a continuous evaluation system of assessment. The core courses of all semesters and the elective courses up to first 6 semesters will have one mid-semester examination and one end semester examination. For every course taken by the student, he/she is assigned a grade based on his/her cumulative performance in the course during the semester. Typically an instructor evaluates each student out of 100 marks of quizzes, tests, mid-semester and end-semester examinations (or in the case of laboratory courses in the applicable parameters) and converts the marks to a letter grade.
Admission
I got admission to this institute after qualifying a national level entrance examination called NEST. NISER currently takes 120 students and the students are admitted directly on the basis of ranks secured in the entrance examination. The notification for NEST is released around the months of February and March. One has to fill the online application form with normal fees of Rs 1000 only. The examination is conducted in the month of June and the results are declared by the first week of July. The administration of NISER is good, helpful and efficient.
Faculty
NISER faculty have a flair for balancing their research activities with a dedication to teaching, through both classroom instruction and independent study advising. Concentrating in physics at NISER will not only teach you about the structure of physical law, but it will allow you to take part in demonstrating them in the laboratories. Along the way you will learn to "think like a physicist" -- a hard-to-describe skill combining practiced intuition, the scientific method, and a knack for approximation -- and you will develop powerful, broadly applicable problem-solving skills.
