Remarks
Overall, the college management is very good. They are not bias towards anyone and they make sure that every thing is done according to rules. The timings are set and there is a lot of security in our college. One feels very safe here and even our parents are tension free because even they think its a very peaceful and homely environment.
Entrance Preview
I took the TU entrance test for PG students. I scored 37 rank in it out of 150 students. I had given other exams of other universities too like GNDU, Panjab University, Punjabi University etc and I cleared all of those too. But Thapar is the best out of the lot. It is one of the premier institutes of India. Thapar University, the name is enough as it focuses on complete development of a student.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course structure is just like the one followed abroad. Its credit system. Benefit of the system is that students are not only cramming the notes and passing the theory exam. Weight-age is given to quiz and lab evaluation as well. Mid terms exams and end semester exams are also taken and all these marks are added to the final result. CGPA is generated according to this.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, our college does provide internship. For instance, we have companies coming since our second semester to provide internship for the second year. Popular companies like Oracle, Intel, SAP have already visited our institute and they not only focus on the freshers of BTECH but also need PG students for research purposes. General stipend offered is on an average of 26000/- per month and later on based on your performance they give us a package of 10lac+. The biggest technical event of Thapar is Saturnalia. It is held every year in October. Other than that we have a lot of marathons, sports championships which are inter varsity. Live webinars are conducted like on data analytics by Tata McGraw Hill company. Nimaya Fest at Thapar's Business School. Anti drug marches are conducted to get awareness among students. Movie showcases. There are a lot of clubs that exist and each student can join that club according to their interests. Clubs and societies like TAAS Thapar Astronomer Society, Movie society etc URJA fest which is a national level sports fest. NOX night that has cultural activities. Izhaar which is a cultural fest. Guest and Expert lectures are conducted after every 2 weeks.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structure is a little expensive but its worth it. My fee for a semester is 69000/- and for the hostel that is a 4-seater room the fees is 25000/-. The fees for AC single seater room is 40000/-. The fee structure for BTECH students in 80000/- and plus. There are various courses offered like M.sc, B.Tech, M.A psychology, M.Tech etc.
Fees and Financial Aid
I have not availed any scholarship, but there is a GATE scholarship that is given to the students who are GATE qualified by AICTE. Other than this, there are government issues scholarships for students who's family income is less than one lac. 30000/- scholarship is given to such students.
Campus Life
Basically, thapar has a lot of students coming from other states like Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, U.P etc. There is no such racism as everyone is treated equally and rules are the same for everyone. Gender ratios are almost equal. In fact, in my class of 60, there must be 20 boys all others are girls. Hostel night is organised, diwali party, holi party, and all such occasions are celebrated with a lot of joy. I think there would be around 5-6 parties in each semester. In the summer vacations, workshops are organised for UG students and they can enroll for any number of workshops. In our university, the main focus is on studies, so topics like discrimination or ragging do not come into concern.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are very clean and spacious and one feels at home. I am currently residing in a 4-seater room that is on the ground floor. The washrooms are common. But cleanliness is the main point that is maintained in the hostel. We have a cleaning lady who cleans our room everyday. The mess is clean and hygienic as well. It is fully air conditioned. Mess bill is around 2500/- for a month and we get unlimited food and are not allowed to waste food which is a good thing. Hostel rooms are spacious. In second year, we are given an option to take a one seater or two seater room, which has AC and a shared toiled with the other room. The hostel capacity is enough for more than 1000 girls. A new hostel has been constructed that has a capacity of 1200. We have a night canteen in each hostel which is open till midnight. TV room, gym, reading room everything is there inside the hostel. If someone is interested in taking a PG, there are a lot of them near our university. Average rent is 3000/-.
Alumni/Alumna
Our seniors are very motivating and uplifting. There are times when I get confused and I always have one of my seniors to guide me through it. They have been through it all, so they help us in a lot of ways. There were two or three times when I was so stressed and didn't know if I was doing the right thing, but my senior helped me out and explained me the pros and cons of my action. If I get stuck somewhere, be it in studies or in life, I could walk up to a senior friend.
Exam Structure
All the subjects are given certain credits. For example a subject has 4 credits. So on the basis of that we get grades depending on the marks we score. Total marks are 100. Out of that 15 marks are for 2 quizzes that are conducted before the mid terms and one is conducted before the end semester exams. The mid terms are of 25 marks or higher and are later normalized. Lab evaluation is of 10 marks. End semester exams could be 60 marks or higher and they are later normalized. All these marks are added and a grade is given to the student on the basis of relative marking. The grades make up the SGPA i.e. Semester Grade Point Average and SGPA of 2 semesters makes the CGPA.
Admission
First, I searched for post graduate admissions in Computer Science and Engineering. As my GATE score was not enough to get me a good institute, I had to give exams of each university. I visited the Thapar website thapar.edu and read about the notification of the admission procedure. It contained all the information about the fee structure, the number of seats in each branch, syllabus of the entrance exam etc. I filled the form online and deposited the fees online. I was later notified about the exam date and time. I took a print out of the admit card and gave the exam. After that, as results were published, we were given a date for counselling. Counselling was on the basis of rank and we were told about the fees earlier as we had to pay it at the counselling. Overall, I did not face any problem during the admission.
Faculty
Thapar has the most number of PHD teachers in Punjab. The faculty is very good and everyone is helping. At thapar, we are not taught regular subjects, like the ones taught everywhere else, in the second semester we were given a choice to choose our electives according to our own interest. Our HOD is master in his field of ethical hacking and is very motivating. All the teachers are very pushy in the sense that they give us all the knowledge that they have. Each one of the teacher is specialized in his/her field. There is so much one can learn from them.
