Remarks

I cleared my Jee Mains with a 98 percentile and got the chance to opt for electrical engineering at Nit Rourkela. The counselling process takes time. First, you have to apply for the college of your choice through JOSSA counselling. It starts 20-30 days after the JEE Advance exam. Students outside of the state should secure around 98-99 percentile in the general category for admission in this branch. Home state students cut off the range in between 95-99 percentile. There is also reservation on the basis of caste. For OBC 14 seats are reserved, for SC 7 and for ST 4 seats are reserved. You have to be present after your allocated seat at the institute which is a tiring process and you have to stand in a queue for the whole day.

Course Curriculum Overview

3

From childhood, I was interested in electrical equipment and its working, so I went for electrical engineering at NIT Rourkela. The faculties are really nice and helpful. The teaching method is not that much efficient as they are hardly audible during class hours. The student ratio is 4:1 for males and females respectively. All the facilities are highly qualified. Everyone has done their PHD from a higher-ranked IIT or NIT. The mid-term exams are held within 2 months of starting the semester. After a 1 month of the gap, the end semester examinations are held.

Internships Opportunities

4.5

The number of companies coming for internships is less than the number of companies which come for placements. The students from the computer science and electrical core branches have a greater number of opportunities than students from other branches. Big companies like Google, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Flipkart and around 50 more came for internships last year. You can easily get an internship if you put a little effort into it. You need to have some projects and knowledge about the field in which you are applying for an internship. Students can also do research internships under the guidance of professors and they assist them with all the help they need. Students can get a stipend of around 40000-2lakhs for a two months internship session.

Placement Experience

4.5

Students are eligible for campus placements from the start of the 7th semester. Anyone having zero backlogs is eligible to sit for placements. Around 200-250 companies from different sectors like IT, analytics, finance, and electronics visit every year. Around 900 students were placed last year from 1100 students with a record of 100% placement in the Mining And Metallurgy Department. The highest package offered was 55 lakhs from Microsoft and the average package was 11 lakhs. If in case you didn't get placements you can still try for off-campus placements in various companies. I am already selected for an internship at Qualcomm and will target PPO next year.

Fees and Financial Aid

For general students, the tution fee is 62500 per semester and other fees like mess fee, hostel accommodation fee, student activity fee and medical fees cost around 20-25000. For families with income between 1lakhs-5lakhs, the tution fee is around 30000 and other fees are same as General students. For families with income less than 1lakh, the entire tution fee is levied. A lot of scholarship options are available for students as soon as they enter the first year. Students will also get a stipend for their on-campus internship in the third year which they can utilise properly.

Campus Life

4.5

There are a total of 4 fests conducted every year. One is Innovision which is the largest techno-management fest of eastern India, one is Cosmopolitan which is the films and music fest, one is Vriddhi the sports fest and one is Nitrutsav the literary and cultural fest. The fest started in the month of August with a one or one-half-month gap between the next fest. Each classroom is a smart classroom with a lot of benches and desks in which two people sit. All classrooms are equipped with air conditioners and fans. The club culture of Nit Rourkela is very large. There are different types of clubs for different activities like drama clubs, dance clubs, art clubs, music clubs etc. The Institute Counselling Service(ICS) is a student body which is run by students to solve student-related issues.

I would rate the placements at my college as 3 out of 5. Students usually become eligible for campus placements from the sixth or seventh semester, and a few well-known companies do visit the campus every year. The placement cell helps with basic training like resume building and interviews, and many students, especially from IT branches, manage to secure jobs. At the same time, the average salary packages are not very high and top roles are limited, so a lot of students also focus on skill development, off-campus opportunities or higher studies after completing their degree

Students are eligible for placement from their 3rd year onwards. It has been only 2-3 months but I have seen several companies arriving at the college, prominent ones being Flipkar,Deloitte, Xerox, TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Microsoft, Dell and several others including startups. There is no accurate data on how many offers have been made this year, but there are rumours that more than 95% of the eligible students have got placements. After getting a degree my plans are if I dont land into a satisfying job then I will start my preparation of the military or start a new business.
