Remarks
To get admission to Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC), students need to clear West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE). Students need to apply for the WBJEE exam in the WBJEEB portal and need to pay INR 500 for general category students and INR 400 for reserve category students. The application form is published from September to November and the exam is held in April. To get admission to the JGEC Information Technology department students must secure a rank of GMR 3000 and it varies for the reserved category. After clearing the WBJEE exam students need to apply for eCounseling and select colleges and departments. If any student gets JGEC IT he/she needs to pay INR 5000 to lock his/her seat. After that, he/she comes to the college for physical verification and takes admission within the date provided by the college with the necessary documents. There are reservations for SC, ST, OBC, PWD, Defence Cota, and TFW (only for poor economic backgrounds).
Course Curriculum Overview
I love computers and coding that's why I was admitted to JGEC Information Technology. There is 1:10 faculty: students ratio which is very poor. Approx all the faculties are well qualified and their teaching methods are quite good, some of the professors teaching methods are very impressive, you just need to attend the class, and your concepts are crystal clear. In the course, there are 8 semesters and 40 subjects. Each semester has 2 mid-semester exams, assignments for every subject, Lab for some issues, and a semester exam. In the exam, the questions mostly come from class notes and only 40% of marks need to pass the exam.
Internships Opportunities
There are mainly research-based internships offered by NITs and IITs provided by the college, but there is no stipend, or there is a very minimal stipend. But students apply for off-campus internships in various companies and startups like Amazon, IBM, KNOREX, Microsoft Engage, DiscoverU, Agrivision4U, The 10X Academy, Payatu, etc. The mostly job is software development and Development.
Placement Experience
In the seventh semester, students are eligible for the college campus drives. The companies visited in college are Amazon (this is they did not come due to the recession), Cognizant, Adani Groups, Erricton (mass requitor), Coca-cola, media.net, etc. The average package offered by the companies is 6.5 LPA and the highest package is 32 LPA (media.net) This is not the end students also applied for off-campus placements and crack lots of top MNCs like Google, Adobe, Microsoft, Uber, Capgemini, IBM, Intel, etc., and the startups like Swiggy, Paytm, Zomato, etc. There is a record of 100% placement in the 2022 batch in the Information Technology department. My plan after getting the degree is to get a high-paying job in a big Tech company.
Fees and Financial Aid
The total course fee for the Information Technology department is 130000. This is 2 times more than the other departments. There are many scholarships from the College, government, alumni, and private companies and organizations. But if a student gets any of the one scholarships he/she is not eligible for the scholarships. At the Government level, there is three scholarship Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Scholarship (SVMCM) and OASIS for reserve categories, and the New Scholarship Policy (central government). At the college level, there are two scholarship Half Fees Weaver and the Full Fees Weaver. There are not very many opportunities for campus placements still students get high-paying jobs from off-campus placements.
Campus Life
There are two major fests in our college. One is Sristy the Tech Fest and JECLET the cultural fest. Sristy was held in February and JECLET was held in April/June. There is a central Library where students can get lots of books but one-time students get 4 books can. Books mostly related to college Academics. In Information Technology Department the 1st and the 2nd year classroom are horrible but there are proper digital classrooms for the 3rd and 4th years. There are 4 grounds and 1 basketball court. Students can play Cricket, Football, Badminton, and Basketball as well as indoor games like chess and carrom. There are overall 16 registered clubs in our college mostly run by students like sports, music, dance, Coding which is the backbone for good placements, SAAC for space research, CFI for robotics, EDC, etc.
Hostel Facilities
There are 5 hostels in our college 4 for boys for each year 1 hostel and 1 for girls hostel. The hostel's capacity is 200 and the hostels are run by the students. In the hostel, they provided lunch and dinner only. The meal quality is horrible but there is food for both vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian students. Hostels were allowed when the admission is going on, there is a need for INR 16000 hostel fees for each semester. The hostel's condition is overall good as per electricity, water, and Internet connectivity. There are lots of PGs in the locality with very good conditions and food quality but that is very costly mostly charging INR 7500 per month.
