The admission exam for the BE and BTech courses at JU is WBJEE. It is a nationally based entrance examination in which questions from maths chemistry and physics are asked. The exam is of 200 marks and the cutoff might be low but you need to score well around 80+ if you want a good stream in JU. 80+ Mrks would guarantee a rank of around 650 to 750 which is fair and you might even get electrical engineering if you're lucky. The application process and details are uploaded to the official website of WBJEEB.
Course Curriculum Overview
I had a rank of around 1k in Wbjee, my options were mechanical, production, power and civil. Civil engineering at Jadavpur University is one of the oldest and most renowned branches in the country. I had a prior interest in this field so I chose this course. The faculty is very helpful and you'll get to study under one of the best professors all over India, number of professors in my faculty ate around 40 and the batch strength is 130. All the faculty members have a PhD some even have a post-doc and the method used is the conventional chalk and board method bit yet it is very effective, in my branch some practical knowledge or field knowledge is required so we often have practical experience of the theoretical knowledge we gained, through field trips, training at various sites and college practical classes as well which happen weekly twice. The term exams aren't very difficult but if you study well you can obviously ace it, no extra studying is required for the GATE exam and just give a few mocks
Internships Opportunities
Internship in the Big four: Pwc, Deloitte, ey (on campus): roles offered are in operations and consultancy based mainly with a stiped of around 40k per month. Companies often come for hiring interns and they pay quite highly. Amazon: 1.5lakh/month, same for Google, Razorpay, Accenture: around 60k Internship opportunities in the core sector are a bit low but in CE we had an ex-con paying 45k per month and for ME we have ITC, Tata metaliks, etc. Internships can always be found offline just it's a bit of hard work that's all it asks. Now apart from these, there are research Internship in foreign as well like Daad for Germany and mitacs for Canada, they are a big addition to your CV if you want to go for higher studies. Various unpaid internships are also there under the professors in the core and research sectors if you want you can avail them as well.
Placement Experience
After 3rd year 2nd sem they get a 3-month break for internships and then after returning the placement season starts. There are core companies that vary from branch to branch but for CE some main companies are LnT, Aditya Birla, exxon etc. The salaries are a bit low for core companies as compared to other fields. It's jot possible to provide the exact number of placements so it's advised to look at the Facebook pages of the department in JU, there you'll get a fair idea. Almost more than 85% of students get placed and for CE Last year it was 85.8% getting placed with around 50% in the core, the highest on-campus offer made was 30lpa by UndosTres, meta. And for all over it was 1.5 crores in Amazon, Dublin. I'm planning to get placed in the consultancy sector, as it pays well and growth is good
Fees and Financial Aid
The most essential point behind choosing JU over other colleges is the fees. It's just 10000 for 4 years!! I don't think any other college in India can be this cheap and provide an education which is almost equal and at times even better than IITs. There are innumerable scholarships which you can avail of if your financial background is not that strong or you belong to any reserved category, especially SC or ST. The job opportunities here are excellent there are all sorts of companies that come, from it consultancy to core you have it all during the placement season. There is another facility where you can do research projects under the professors at the university
Campus Life
There are various kinds of fests going on in JU. There are sanskriti that happen for 3 faculties i.e., engineering, science and arts. It is one of the best experiences you'll ever have singing and dancing in OAT (open-air theatre), there are one union freshers Uturn, it is the best welcome gift stepping into JU, there are all kinds of sports events from football and cricket kabaddi basketball to singing competition etc. The tech fest Is srijan where there are robocars competitions, gaming events and whatnot. The list of fests would never be over but JU is one heck of a journey which is joyous and you learn through every step you take inside the campus. The library is always stacked with books and journals and is regularly updated. The classroom is normal but they're big and don't really get uncomfortable but since the university is old and funding are limited so there's no development there. There are every type of club, dance drama, fashion, the science you find it all and are run by the students
Other Applied Colleges
ISM Dhanbad - Indian Institute of Technology - [IITISM] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Mining Engineering)
The course fees was way higher plus the placements were not as good as Jadavpur University
