Life at an IIT

I have chosen to pursue Data Science and Engineering as my B.Tech major because it is a rapidly growing field in the IT industry and plays a significant role in the development of various industries. This field is relatively new and offers a wide range of job opportunities globally. After completing this course, one can choose to further their education with a Master's or Ph.D. degree. IIT Mandi has the best faculty-to-student ratio among all the IITs, which is 1:8. Additionally, there are teaching assistants available to help students with their problems. The faculty members are highly qualified and many of them hold positions as Associate Professors or higher at various IITs and NITs. They possess extensive knowledge in their respective fields. At IIT Mandi, the course structure typically includes two quizzes and one end-semester exam, although the exact number of assessments depends on the instructor. With consistent learning, students can score good marks in exams.

The maximum stipend a student can receive during their internship is Rs. 2 lakh per month. During this recruiting season, several renowned companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, Siemens, Samsung, Oracle, Google, Uber, Zomato, HDFC Finance, and Hitachi, have participated. The available roles range from Software Development Engineer (SDE) to product management to the data analyst, with some companies offering more than one role. Students can choose the role that aligns with their interests. IIT Mandi regularly holds the yearly hackathon "Frosthack," which provides students with the opportunity to enhance their skills and add projects to their resumes. Additionally, IIT Mandi offers a flagship interdisciplinary course, where students must develop a working prototype.

Students are eligible for campus placements starting from the beginning of their 4th year. However, prior to placements, students must complete their internships, which begin in their 3rd year. During the hiring season, many companies visit IIT Mandi, including major recruiters such as Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Siemens, Trilogy Innovations (Codenation), Sprinkler, and Google. Other companies, such as Oracle, Uber, Flipkart, Paytm, and Razorpay, also participate in the campus placement program. The highest package offered within India was reported to be INR 62.5 Lakhs, while international packages can reach as high as INR 2 crores. Based on statistics from the previous year, more than 95% of students were placed through on-campus or off-campus placements. After obtaining my degree, I plan to work and support my family financially. After achieving financial stability, I plan to pursue an MBA from an IIM.

The fees for general students at IIT Mandi are approximately amount to INR 1 Lakh per semester. This fee does not include charges for the hostel and mess, which are to be paid separately. There are one-time fees for items such as ID cards and medical claims. The institute fee may vary based on family income, with a reduced fee for families earning between INR 1-5 Lakhs and a waiver for families earning less than INR 1 Lakh. Female students who maintain a high CGPA may also have their institute fees waived. There is also an option for SC/ST and OBC/General students to apply for the MCM Scholarship, based entirely on their CGPA, which can fully waive the institute fees. IIT Mandi holds three major festivals annually: Xpecto, the technical festival, held in March; Exodia, the cultural festival, held in May; and Ran-neeti, the sports festival, held in October. The institute has well-equipped libraries on both its North and South campuses, with a vast collection of books, both in hard copy and electronic format, as well as research papers and theses from students and faculty. Classrooms are designed to provide a comfortable and productive learning environment, equipped with blackboards and smartboards and suitable for accommodating up to 300 students at a time. There are numerous clubs at IIT Mandi, including photography, writing, dance, robotics, programming, and clubs dedicated to specific branches of engineering, sports, and more. IIT Mandi has its own hostels located on both the North and South Campuses. B. Tech. students typically reside in the North Campus, while PG students reside in the South Campus. The hostels are designed to meet the needs of students, with individual cupboards, study tables, and well-lit and ventilated rooms equipped with a bed. Each hostel has its own facilities, including electric induction cookers, microwaves, washing machines, water heaters, and sports equipment such as table tennis and foosball tables. The food provided by the mess is nutritious, with separate sections for vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Students can register for hostel and mess through the OAS portal of IIT Mandi, with fees paid at the start of each semester along with institute fees. The current fee for the hostel and mess is INR 22,000 per semester. Unfortunately, PG accommodation is not currently available.

Eligibility for pursuing a B. Tech. degree at any Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) required one to have passed their 12th class examination and cleared both the JEE Mains and JEE Advanced exams. The JEE Advanced exam is conducted annually. The registration fees for the exams vary for boys and girls and also vary for different castes. After successfully clearing the JEE Advanced exam, the candidate must apply through the JOSAA portal and pay the necessary fees with the required documents. Reservation benefits are available for different castes and genders, as well as for PwD students. The JOSAA portal is not limited to IITs and can be used to apply for various different colleges such as NIT and IIITs.
