The entrance in ISM Dhanbad was through IIT JEE earlier. Recently there have been some changes in the admission examination which I am not aware of, but I am aware that the entrance examination for ISM is the same as that for any other IIT.

The college helps students in getting internship. It invites reputed companies to campus which select students for internship after an interview or written examination or both.The stipend is variable depending on the company. Stipends in some of the companies in oil Industry go as high as 70000 a month, while there are also companies which provide around 20000.

The placement at ISM is phenomenal. Some of the companies that visit ISM for recruitment include Shell, Shlumberger, Rio-Tinto, Facebook, Microsoft, KPMG, DRDO, Samsung, Accenture strategy, CIL. Tata Steel, NMDC, Adani group, Reliance Industries, Jindal group, Mu Sigma, etc.The highest international package is 52 lakhs per annum offered by Rio Tinto. The domestic highest is 26 lakhs, offered by Schlumberger. The lowest package offered at ISM is 4 Lakh. The average package is around 8 lakhs. The college boasts 100 % placement.

The biggest event is the technical cum cultural fest organised at ISM. The event is really huge. More than a thousand students from different colleges across India visit ISM to participate in various events and celebrities like Mika Singh, Pankaj Udhas, Jal band, VJ Ranvijay Singh, Simon Webbe, etc have been roped-in in the past to perform. The budget for the fest goes as high as 30-40 lakhs.Apart from the fest, other events include Pratibimb (intra-branch extra-curricular competition), Basant (Alumni reunion), Muqabla (inter college cricket tournament), Oorja (Music fest), etc.

The fee structure at ISM is quite feasible. The fee during 2007-2011 when I was a student was 18000 per semester including hostel charges.

The loan facility is easily available at ISM. During the induction program itself SBI opens a stall at ISM to provide loan to students interested. It is a very hassle free process and takes just a few minutes.The scholarship offered at ISM is need based and is offered in two categories. Under first category the entire fee is covered and under the other, beside the entire fee, students also get an additional amount of Rs 16000 per semester.There is also a central govt scholarship for students who pursue 5 year integrated course like MSc Geology, MSc Geophysics, MSc Chemistry, etc. The amount of scholarship is Rs 60000 per semester and is offered only in IITs and ISM to promote science and research.

The gender ratio is one area where ISM lacks.On an average there are around 30 boys for each girl at ISM.ISM is acquiring new land adjacent to the present campus, which would nearly double its area. Massive construction activities are ongoing in the existing ISM campus. ISM is home to the Geological Museum, the Seismic Observatory, a Data Processing Laboratory, the Long Wall Mine Gallery and the Remote Sensing Laboratory.
