Remarks
Life in VIT has been nothing but a roller coaster ride which is worth remembering a lifetime. It has helped me grow as an individual and also has given me the courage to explore any field in life that I would want to with no hesitation. On a personal basis, it has definitely been a home away from home. The memories made here would be cherished for a lifetime and beyond.
Entrance Preview
VITEEE, which is the Vellore Institute of technology enterance examination. I got a rank of 18,000 or so. Why this college? Because it's one of the most reputed institutes in India. Also the infrastructure and equipment available for civil engineering in the college is world class. Apart from the academics, a lot of importance is given to extra curricular activities as well which is very important for the all round development of the mind.
Course Curriculum Overview
I had taken Civil engineering. As I said before, the infrastructure and equipment available for this particular course in VIT is really good. All the important courses were covered and the right amount of balance between practical and theoritcal subjects were maintaines. There is a system called the FFCS, meaning Fully Flexible credit system, which allows us to set out own time tables comprising of the faculties, timings and courses which is one striking feature of the college. Also, every semester 20% of our total aggregate is alotted for a Project based learning where each student has to submit projects related to the respective courses they have taken up in that particular semester. This helped us get more exposure to applying our theoritical knowledge into producing somethig practical.
Internships Opportunities
No, not in my particular department. But the other branches did have some companies which came up, especially computer science.
Placement Experience
This is another major factor how this college has earned it's reputation. There are over 400 companies which visit the campus during the placement drive. A lot of people do get into the core jobs but if not they definitely get picked by one of the IT giants. The placement team are very cordial and considerate. Ample amount of oppurtunities are provided for the student to get placed.
College Events
We have one technical fest and one cultural fest which are world class. Renowned scientist, celebrities and other hotshots grace these events with their presence. All the students are encouraged to participate actively in the events being organised. Apart from these, we have regular social gatherings for festivals and other joyous occassions. The cultural fest, Riviera is one of the best celebrated ones in south India which sees students coming and participating from all over the country.
Fee Structure And Facilities
For the facilities being provided, I would say the fee structure is very much feasible. (Until our batch. I don't know what the current scenario is) AC rooms and special messes are the standout features. The hostels are really good and it certainly makes it feel as a home away from home.
Fees and Financial Aid
No, not any I have heard of. But there are a few fee waivers given to people aquiring ranks below 1000 in the enterance examination. Also, the top 10 students from each branch are awarded with a cashprize every year. The best projects and other innovations are also funded and rewarded.
Campus Life
The campus life is brilliant. We have all the sports facilities ranging from footballs grounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, swimming pool etc. A lot of hangout spots have come up which serve mouth watering food at nominal rates and also offer good ambience. There are no gender based discriminations which are done. Everyone is given equal oppurtunities to prove their mantle. Maybe that's why, the number of girls who join are also more. We have a number of foreign exchange students as well who have taken up courses in our college. There are strict rules regarding the hostel/college in and out times with high security standards.
Hostel Facilities
As I have stated before, the hostel and mess facilities are nothing less than world class. They are all very clean, hygenic and highly secure. We have three kinds of messes, namely the North Indian, South Indian and the Special mess. So students can choose their respective messes according to their convenience at the beginning of the semester itself. AC and non AC rooms are available. Either of them are very spacious and well organised. There are only 2 bedded and 3 bedded rooms available. Which makes the rooms less congested. There's an indoor gym and sports acitivty centre which are all well equipped and and also well maintained.
Alumni/Alumna
I have just passed out and hence wouldn't know much about it. But our seniors do gather for their respective alumni meets very often. I'm looking forward to mine too.
Exam Structure
We had 3 exams per semester. 2 Continuous assessment tests and one Term end examination. We had the concept of relative grading installed in our system which was a huge plus as it helped put less pressure on us. We also had a project based learning for each course every semester.
Admission
I got a merit seat throught VIT enterance examination. People below the rank of 20,000 were called for the counselling process. Since mine was 18,625, I was eligible. The counselling process was done very systematically where the HOD's of each department were present to clarify doubts. Overall it was an amazing experience.
Faculty
Around 80% of VIT's faculties have acquired their PhD's from reputed institutes in India. So they are all very well qualified. Also they are very approachable and never hesitate in going that extra mile to help the students. Each subject has a specialized faculty of it's own. Most of them are well experienced and great mentors.
