IIT(ISM)-Dhanbad - A British era IIT.

I am currently pursuing a B.Tech degree in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. I am currently in the second semester, so a common course is going on for all freshers. The complete new admissions are divided into 8 sections and each consists of students between 130-140. Later, in the second-year students will study as per their respective department courses. All the faculty members are doctorates and are highly qualified, but that doesn't mean they all are brilliant teachers. Some profs are boring but in college, you need to adjust, and you need to study by yourself. We have our mid-semester exams after 2 months of semester start and then end semester exams after 2 months of mid-sem. You can ace a nice grade by studying hard a week before exams but for topper grades like a 9+ GPA, you need to study 15-20 days before exams.

Internship opportunities are very very decent in the college. From the third year onwards there is a college-sponsored internship drive on campus. The institute releases a report on internships stating a total of 422 internship offers were offered with monthly stipends ranging from 15k to 2lakhs. Also. in the internship season of the previous batch a total of 292 PPOs were given to the interns.

As it's an old IIT, hence campus placements are awesome without any doubt. From the third year onwards the students are required to do internship programmes and it's college sponsored. Many bag PPO's during it, and generally, the placement starts from the beginning of the 4th year. This year 1049 job offers were given out of which 1014 were accepted, with an average package of 17.69lpa and a highest domestic package of 56lpa. Various top companies like Amazon, Uber, Barclays, Microsoft, Zomato, Unacademy, etc. visit and recruit from the campus. The college is famous for its placements in PSU's like ONGC, Coal India, GAIL, etc. and thus many students even got recruited there. My plans are not placement oriented, I want to go for higher studies or management studies.

Generally, the fee structure is a fee of 1.25 lakhs per semester. It may get changed as per economic conditions every financial year. You can have scholarships based on your family income. If your family income is under 5lpa would get a two-third fee waiver on tuition fees(1 lakh per semester). And, if it's below 1lpa you would be given a 100% fee waiver on tuition fees. Also, you can get an MCM scholarship on your CGPA in college, and also there are numerous alumni-funded scholarships for needy and deserving candidates.

Campus life is next-level and awesome. After all, it's an IIT. We have all kinds of sports grounds and facilities for all your sporty needs. The campus is lush green and undoubtedly one of the best college campuses in India. We have legendary heritage buildings built in 1926 and sky-touching modern infrastructure. The Library in the college is Asia's second-largest technical library, equipped with awesome reading areas and comfort. Lecture Halls are equipped with smart classrooms and are very spacious. There are various eating outlets in the campus like BARISTA, CCD, two Nescafe Canteens, Amul outlets and the famous RD Shop. There is also a mini mart in the campus. There are clubs for all kinds of hobbies you would like to pursue in college. The annual fest of IIT(ISM), Dhanbad is called SRIJAN, it's the biggest socio-cultural fest of eastern India and the tech fest is called CONCETTO. Also, we have KHANAN, Asia's largest geo-mining fest. TAKSHAK is also a tech-fest for deep-sea mining.

All the students are allocated hostel rooms on the very first day of admission. Hostels are named after various precious gemstones. I live in the Jasper Hostel, which is for first-year students. The rooms are pre-occupied with two beds and an inbuilt wardrobe as well as an inbuilt desk. The room has very nice ventilation with a large window near the study table. The rooms are also facilitated with a high-speed LAN connection. One room is allocated to two students and the hostels get changed after every year. Each floor of the hostel has its own mess. The mess food is okayish for non-veg people but for veg, it's not good at all.

Since the college is an IIT, admission was solely based on the rank of JEE Advanced and the admission process was conducted by JoSSA. To come here for a B.Tech undergrad course, you must be 12th passed with PCM subjects as your major. Then you must fill out a form for JEE Mains, which is a screening test for JEE Advanced. The application form is generally out in January and then April, because the exam is conducted twice at the website of the National Testing Agency(NTA). Then qualified candidates of JEE Mains are eligible to write one of the toughest exams in the world-The JEE Advanced. Based on your JEE Advanced rank you are eligible to take admission in the college.
