Remarks
The recent government policy of reservation may have detoriated the quality but the college in itself is great. Very helpful even after passing out.
Entrance Preview
AIJEE for IHM. I scored rank 65 pan India. This curriculum gave me an opportunity not only to be a part of a happening & fun industry..but also served as a great finishing school. There is a joint entrance exam for those who want admission, generally held in Nov-Dec. The particular IHM college is assigned as per rank obtained.
Course Curriculum Overview
Great curriculum. A good balance of theoretical knowledge coupled with practical experience. A real hotel-like atmosphere in all major departments ensures a holistic development of the student's mind. Very well qualified professors and helpful staff.
Internships Opportunities
Yes. A mandatory 6 month internship is part of the curriculum. This happens in the 2nd year of the 3 year course. A round of interviews are conducted by the visiting Hotels who then select the candidates for their respective properties. A detailed report is expected at the end of the session.
Placement Experience
Decent opportunities. The college administration does all it can to invite a large number of hotels and related organisation's to conduct student placements. Recently there have been some placements abroad as well. Though the ratio of Management trainee selection is less..but that is more of an industry practise rather than the college's failure.
College Events
Starts with the freshers welcome party. Expectedly great food, performances, welcome speeches etc. 3rd years farewell..follows the same format. All.major festivals are celebrated by decoration's, themed cuisines etc. The Gourmet Nite is an annual event ..and the most awaited. One of the biggest hotel management college fest's ..invited artists, guests, hundreds of dishes and everything is done by the students.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Reasonably feasible for a professional course. Paid semester wise, in 6 month intervals. Though there are education loans available easily through various banks. The fees are charged semester wise. Hostel availing candidates pay extra. There are some additional expenses like uniforms, equipment, journals etc like any other institution. The city of kolkata itself is one of the most economically easy major cities..hence extra expenditure is limited.
Fees and Financial Aid
I didn't avail any but the course easily qualifies for an educational loan from any leading bank. Most banks offer reasonable interest rates..a friend of mine took out a loan for the total course fees..which at the time was around 2.5lac's..the EMI's started after the passing out and were only around 3000 per month.
Campus Life
70:30 Boys to girls. Overall college life is fun though a little hectic..Actually feels like learning on the job. Great focus on developing character too. Session's are arranged for 3rd year student's on interviewing skills and Group discussion by external professionals.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel - basic but good. separate buidlings for boys and girls. Students are allowed out of campus only till about 8pm..unless they have a writtent document form the local guardian. The hostels though are alloted on a first come first served basis..which tends to mean the better rank people get it first or students from furthest off. For those who do not get a hostel admission therr are varous college approved PGs and private residences which are availavle fro nomial costs. They have a resident admin officer and some of the faculty living on campus too. Strict security..Mess food is better thanost colleges as obviously is expected from future chefs. There is a daily lunch provided at college cos for all students from the morning's kitchen practical classe's.
Alumni/Alumna
Excellent alumni network. They actually host an Alumni night annually without fail and is attended very year by around a 100 members. There are regular visits by passed out student's and most hotels have at least one person whi passed out of the college already working there.
Exam Structure
Formal semester based written tests along with oral Viva and practical tests for the major courses, i.e F&b, kitchen, housekeeping and front office. EXmas are not that difficult if classes are followed dilligently. There are some non major subjects too like hotel engineering, account's and food nutrition etc which are mostly theory based which means long essay type answers during exams. The practical tests are fun and stressful at the same time..almost like the masterchef kitchen! Not only you have to get everything perfect while working alone or in groups of 4, you have to have the top grooming standards, get your equipment right and be dressed in uniform.
Admission
The admission advertisements are published in major newspapers around mid year..and forms are available online on IHM website or through state & national banks. You have to fill up the form, submit it along with a Demand Draft of around 1200 INR. Please do some research on the nature of work/viability of professional career choices before taking the jump..as though outwardly glamorous, it is one of the most hard working and long working hours kind of sector. The college administration is quite smooth functioning, though a bit too formal & rigid( like most government sector enterprises).
Faculty
Excellent. Very well qualified..most have had experience in live hotels and other related industries before joining as a professor, hence provide a detailed and clear picture. Most are very cooperative and fun. Even the non-major subject faculty is above par. Though the age old concept of writing journals and copying answers is still followed for theory..the practical aspects balances it well
