Remarks

NIT Rourkela has the one of the best infrastructures in India among institutes, a total area of around 1100 acres. Faculty is average, and students are above average overall.

Entrance Preview

AIEEE, score 203. I chose NIT Rourkela because it offered Dual Degree. I wanted to take up dual degree because it saved an year, and I could get masters within an year.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

Course Curriculum is theoretically rigorous. Profs. would emphasise a lot on the theoretical aspects. Curriculum lacks seriously on the practical aspect of things. There is no coding culture promotion from the side of the institute. Only a bunch of students take up coding seriously, which is very important for Computer Science graduates.

Internships Opportunities

Yes. NIT Rourkela has a summer internship program. Its published every year on www.nitrkl.ac.in . Students get place to live, mess food. Stipend depends on the faculty.

Placement Experience

3

Placements in NIT Rourkela are decent. Branches like CS and ECE see many company visiting the institute. Many students crack off-campus placements as well. Avg. salary for CS brach is around 6-7 LPA. Highest being 24LPA for CS for my year. Other branches also see companies, however compensation is below expectations.

College Events

4

Every year there are 4 major events in the institute. Tech-fest, Celebrity Night, International student meet, and cult-fest(Nitrutsav). Fest budgets are decent and institute sees huge participation from adjacent institutes of Odisha and other nearby states. The best fest out of these four is cult-fest, which is usually in month of October/November.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee structure is similar to most of the NITs. Mess fees is also decent, given the kind of food that is provided. For my batch, institute fees remained between 40K and 50K for a semester. It's feasible given that it is very easy to avail student loan, in case one is in-capable of paying his fees.

Fees and Financial Aid

It is very easy to avail loan from SBI, a branch of which is inside the institute. You just need to have minimum documents required.

Campus Life

4.5

Campus life is what students like the most. NIT rourkela has many international students, including students from UAE, Afghanistan, France, etc. as part of DASA or exchange programs. Gender ratio is as good/bad as most engineering colleges. There are more than 40 cultural/technical/dance/music clubs, which are pretty active and have huge participation of students.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

Hostel rooms are poor. However, overall hostel life is good. Rooms are on twin sharing basis till third year of a student. They get a separate room in their final year. There are in total 9 hostels, with one of them being as big as having a capacity of 1600 students.

Alumni/Alumna

Alumni network is building up. NIT Rourkela has seen some great progress in alumni network in recent years. NITRAA has actively tried to help students to get exposed to the industry.

Exam Structure

You'd have 2 exams per semester and occasional class tests( depending upon the faculty). These exams are usual school type exams, where you're not allowed to carry anything but stationary and calculators. Unlike institutes like BITS Pilani, where students are allowed to carry books in few exams. Exams are usually easy to crack, if you're not aiming for a 9 pointer. An all nighter is sufficient to crack any exam.

Admission

I got admission through AIEEE counselling. It went for seven rounds. There is a web portal where you have option to fill in your options and sort then in order of decreasing priority. We had option to surrender our seats, if we were not satisfied with in round 3 and 4. I was allotted NIT Rourkela in round 4. Whereafter I went to the institute to finalise my choice.

Faculty

3

College faculties are experience and competent, but rigid. They are qualified but inflexible. They know their matter well, but they're not prepared to learn new things to keep up with the industry. You'll have hard time having a meaningful discussion with some faculties without upsetting them.

Placement Experience:

I would rate the placements at my college as 3 out of 5. Students usually become eligible for campus placements from the sixth or seventh semester, and a few well-known companies do visit the campus every year. The placement cell helps with basic training like resume building and interviews, and many students, especially from IT branches, manage to secure jobs. At the same time, the average salary packages are not very high and top roles are limited, so a lot of students also focus on skill development, off-campus opportunities or higher studies after completing their degree

Students are eligible for placement from their 3rd year onwards. It has been only 2-3 months but I have seen several companies arriving at the college, prominent ones being Flipkar,Deloitte, Xerox, TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Microsoft, Dell and several others including startups. There is no accurate data on how many offers have been made this year, but there are rumours that more than 95% of the eligible students have got placements. After getting a degree my plans are if I dont land into a satisfying job then I will start my preparation of the military or start a new business.
