Course Curriculum Overview
I was allocated a seat at the Indian Institute Of Engineering Science and Technology(IIEST), Shibpur through JOSSA and was given B. Tech Mechanical Engineering four-year program according to my merit in JEE. Faculty to students ratio is 1:13. Faculty members are well-studied and generally Ph.D. holders in their field of research and study, studied from well Known IITs and abroad universities. Their teaching methods are however little slow and old schooled with the same methodologies for the last 6-7 years. In my time the first year was completely offline after the Corona period and was completed in just 8 months. I gave two-term Examinations, which I found quite normal to pass but a little difficult to pass with very good grades in such a less time.
Internships Opportunities
Haven't had any experience of internships yet in the first year. But I have heard about summer internships being offered by the college to the students from their second-year course of study, with stipends ranging from 10k to 50k.
Placement Experience
Students are eligible for campus placements for 3 years. The companies like TCS, CTS, Infosys, Google, IBM, Excel, Accenture, Lister Technology, Mu Sigma, L&T, and much more visit the campus to hire students. The highest package offered during IIEST Shibpur placements 2022 was INR 45 LPA. Further, 776 offers were made and 1022 companies visited the campus during IIEST Shibpur placements in 2022. The top recruiters of IIEST Shibpur in 2022 included leading companies such as Microsoft, IBM India, and Cognizant. 80-90% of students get placed in their respective departmental companies. I plan to take up a job after the degree and prepare for CAT Examinations and try to get to an IIM.
Fees and Financial Aid
I am from the SC category so I didn't have to pay a lot of money as compared to general category students and thus for me fess hike was not much affected. In my first year, I didn't find any suitable internships or scholarships for me. Maybe, I will get some scholarships from my second year of course.
Campus Life
Our annual fest REBECCA(conducted in April) and Tech fest INSTRUO (conducted in January) are the main events with other departmental events coming all around the year with small cultural events according to festivals of India to celebrate secularism. Our library has a very good collection of our departmental books from the best authors including some of our own professors. Classroom amenities were poor in the first year with no ACs or smart boards but expected to have in the second year. All sports are played on campus and encouraged to play for the college as a representative and extracurriculars include music, dance, photography, art, etc. There is a social group called ICCHE working for poor and needy people and several spiritual groups for prayers and worship.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels include free electricity, water, and internet 24/7, and mess charges 29500 per semester. For me, the quality of the food is ok with all hygiene being maintained but the taste doesn't suit me much, with a constant menu and occasional good food like biryani and kebabs. Registration was done during the college seat allotment and hostels are quite affordable.
Admission
I took Joint Entrance Examinations(JEE) for admission to NITs and IITs. For this, the eligibility criteria are to have 75% in class 10th and 12th with science stream. The application form is online and the fee is 1500 or less according to category. Application dates are announced way before the release of the form. I availed of a reservation through SC Kota and eventually got decrement in fees and cut-off marks for the said entrance examinations. The main flaw of the admission process is the amount of time taken, eventhough there are so many aspirants, still, the process is online and thus it should take lesser time to complete the admission process.
