IIT KGP:A Brief Intro

My experience in this college has been life altering for me. it has brought my introvert self and helped me express myself.

To get into IIT you have to clear JEE mains and JEE Advanced. JEE is undoubtedly one of the toughest exams in the World with a acceptance ratio of less than 1%.Its a dream for almost every student inclined to science to get into an IIT,but only very few make it thorough to the IITS after competing with lakhs of students.There are no interview process involved. you get your seat according to your rank and that is alloted to you by JOSAA. look it up in google. My course is integrated MSC in applied Geology. The rank that I had in jee didnot leave me much option and the best one that I could come up with was applied geology in IIT kgp.

I am in the first year. The curriculum for first year is common to all in IIT. We have visited our labs in our departments and from what I have personally heard and concluded is that its a very diverse department paving your path for both core and non core jobs. A lot of research in the field is being done by our institute. They have also collaborated with other foreign institutes to come up with smart solutions to mining the ocean bed. There are plenty of electives available and a part of the main curriculum.you can look up in google to find them.

There is Career development cell to look into internships of students. alot of people get foreign internships while others whose a Multi National company to get familiarized with the industrial work environment. I am in first year so I don't yet know about internship experience and stipend.

Since youn are in IIT rest assured you have a high probability that you are going to get placed.around 90% people get placed. the major companies that visited the campus are google,facebook, microsoft,oracle,adobe,schlumberger and many more. the average package varies from branch to branch. IN Computer Science it goes to as high as 34lakh per annum. The institute average is around 11 lpa.

we host asia's largest techno management fest kshitij. we also host spring fest which is asian's one of the largest cultural fest.The food party and fun with friends is what makes this fest so enjoyable.No wonder students wait for the arrival of this fests from day one of their stay at iit kgp. the average footfall is around 40 thousand people including students and faculty from other colleges the contestants and stuff and organizing committee members.

The fee structure is a bit harsh for the general category students.Its around 1lakh 20 thousand per semester with hostel and food included. you can easily get scholar loans if you require financial assistance. If you are from reserved class then your sem fees comes out be around 45 thousand.

yes I have availed a scholar loan from the SBI bank branched at our college. Its very smooth. the fact that you are an IITIAN easily gets you the loan. all you have to do is to provide the necessary proofs of your admission and thats all that needs to be done.

IIT kgp gives you a plethora of opportunity to discover your hidden talents not only in the field of academics but also in the sports and other cultural activities. there are ample of competions apart from the famous inter IIT meet where all IITs compete against the best of each others. The facilities are very well devoloped and there are coaches for potential candidates to get trained by.

For first year students we stay in a room of 3 people.the size of the room is quite decent. we get a table chair and rack of 3 to keep your belongings along with a single bed.the food is not the best but is edible. The best part is the fun you have with your friends. We have guest houses to accommodate visitors. the cost of staying varies from 1 guest house to another. They come as cheap as 650 per night with food included.The food that the guest house provide are decent,but if you want better quality food you have lots of good restaurants like peep's kitchen,heritage etc to satisfy a foodie.

IIT Kharagpur has undoubtedly the best alumni network around the globe. Sundar Pichai the CEO of google is an alumnus of our institution. The list of successful people who have been an alumnus of IIT kharagpur is huge. We have a well formed Alumni connect cell that keeps us in constant contact with graceful alumni who guides us. The alumni have had an huge impact to the well being of our college, from giving huge donations to coming and delivering motivating speech they are the people this institute should be forever indebted to.

The exams and lab courses does make your life at kgp a bit stressful to be honest,but given the fact that we are in IIT it is quite obvious that we will have academic pressure. But IIT Kharagpur provides you plethora of opportunities to de-stress yourself so the nerd culture is okay I guess.

The faculties are highly qualified,most of them a prodigy in their respective field. The faculties have to initially serve as assistant professor under a full time professor for some year before they become a full time professor themselves. Most of the faculty members encourage interactive study making the lectures interesting.You can ask any doubt to them in class or after class in the respective departments. There are very few professors you might end up disliking owing ton certain qualities but I can assure you if you are regular to class you will form a decent bond with the professor and they will help you nurture passion for that particular course.
