Remarks
Jamia is a very good university. It's among-st the best in Delhi-NCR. Although some issues has stopped it from being the best. There is always some or the other politics being played in the college. Sometimes it's in admissions or sometimes in exams and administration. But still my college life has been undoubtedly great till now.
Entrance Preview
After giving the 12 th board examination, I was kind of scared of how to go about college. Then, I got to know that the Delhi University doesn’t have any entrance examination; all of this works on the basis of your 12 th board examination marks. The college I am studying in is affiliated to the Delhi University and follows the same process as under DU. Basically, a cut off list is released that makes you eligible for admission. For example- If the cut-off of a particular course in a college is 98%, and I have scored 98% in my best four subjects (doesn’t include second language and courses like PE), then I can go to that particular college and get myself enrolled. There is no interview process followed as such. The comprehensiveness of the course made me choose it.
Course Curriculum Overview
As I mentioned earlier, the course was comprehensive. It indeed made me socially aware. The course is so well designed that the students who do not have a strong literary background can also understand and grasp the ideas of the course. The teachers are supportive and believe in practical learning; but they are flexible enough to let us choose between a research project and a class assignment. Yes, there are research initiatives taken by the institute, it is basically the student’s choice to do it or not.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, college does offer internship,it's mostly students don't get aware of it. I had preferred choosing it on my own. The college internship experience is subjective it totally depends on how enterprising one is and how hard they are willing to work. I believe one can have a great internship experience in a start up since there is a lot of work load you basically learn when there is a load on you. I had a good experience through the course of my internship, I indeed learnt a lot. The average stipend amount depends from firm to firm; it’s approximately in between a few hundreds to a few thousands over the course of a month.
Placement Experience
The placement and job opportunities offered on campus are abundant; but arts students don’t get placed a lot. I won't sit for placements as I want to do MS from abroad and I have been preparing for GRE/TOEFL , hence I don’t have much idea about the companies and placement procedures.
College Events
The University as a whole organizes uncountable events to draw the attention of not only the students studying in the colleges under the university but also the students of various colleges. There are many events organized exclusively according to the interest of the students. Example: The Tech Fest. The two major events organized by our college are “The Diwali Mela” , "Tamili Mela" by NSS and “Taber” the annual cultural fest. They have a huge footfall each year and intercollege competitions are also organized by the students to maintain the zeal. My college management is efficient and works to help the students to celebrate festivals, we do have a youth club that takes hold of this and under it, the events are conducted.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Being a government institute, it is quite affordable. The fee varies within a range of 15,000-30,000 a year. It basically depends on the course you’ve opted for. Also, there is a variation in the fee structure each year for a particular course. Every student is supposed to pay the fee in the beginning of each year. Apparently, I had to pay a round figure of 16,000 this year, which is yet again way cheaper than those private institutes.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes, the college does give a chance to the students to grab a good amount in the form of a scholarship. But grabbing this opportunity is a hard task since the students who are academically brilliant and are committed to their goals are the only ones receiving it. One has to be very diligent in availability and application process of these. No, I certainly did not avail for one.
Campus Life
The extracurriculars are at its best in Jamia. Every sport is given equal importance by providing the clubs with equal funding and proper equipments. There is a very big stadium for playing sports. The Drama Society is very active. They keep on practicing for various plays which are very good to watch. I think there is enough gap between papers that one can easily be a part of these activities and excel in various cocurricular activities as well.
Hostel Facilities
Yes, I was residing in a hostel. Initially, in the first year, we were randomly assigned a roommate to share the room with and we did not have much freedom. In the second year, we were allowed to choose our own roommate and in the third year, we were allotted a single room only on the basis of the marks we score. We used to have dorm parties and a lot of fun. The mess food was good; we used to get sweet dish too. I paid a round figure of 5,000 rupees a year. Personally, I really don’t have any idea about PGs because I never talked to anybody about this. But surely they were available near the college.
Alumni/Alumna
Many renowned personalities are pass outs of Jamia. Amongst them SRK is one such name. Although they have never visited the campus during my time till now but still it gives us pride to call ourself Jamians. Some Alumni do come for the Alumni meets.
Exam Structure
The course I was studying did not have much of practical work and therefore, we did not have labs. We had to attend classes 8 hours a day (unlike other DU colleges) and I certainly do feel that it was very hectic for all of us since attendance was a way to score extra well. There were assignments and tests for internal evaluations and besides this the end semester exams, that used to scare the freak out of us. I would say, the culture isn’t that chill.
Faculty
The whole faculty is highly qualified and helps their students to learn beyond books. They believe in applying the things that students learn and therefore, in the beginning of every class there is a questionnaire of the previous class, basically a practical questionnaire. Beyond this, they do take initiatives to help us develop values and try to develop personalities of the students by making them interact to them and the class. They help us building self confidence and try to boost up our self esteem by telling us that we can make it. They also take up queries beyond classes and do lend an ear when needed. On the scale of 10, I would rate them 10 on 10.
