Intensive coursework & great campus life

An institute is a great place for personal development and education. It opened up a completely different atmosphere and the world of opportunities for me. Especially professionally. Also, Powai (where the campus is located) is a beautiful place and a bustling center in Mumbai.

I took the JAM (Joint Admission for Masters) entrance exam in the subject of statistics. Master in statistics is usually awarded by the mathematics department at IITs. Only IITK and IITB offer master's programs: M.Sc. in Statistics and M.Sc. in Applied Statistics and Informatics respectively. Since I was looking for a more applied course with subjects in computing like c/c++ I chose M.Sc. at IITB

The course curriculum is extensive. The final year has both a Masters's thesis and course work which usually means a lot of work and hours that one has to put in towards it. There is a lot of purely theoretical research happening in the department of Math as well as some industrial projects. The electives are diverse: Biostatistics, Applied Algorithms, Statistical Techniques in Data Mining, Analysis of Multi-type & Big Data, etc. More details can be found on the website of IITB Math dept.

Yes, many students get internships through the IITB placement cell every summer. There are lots of opportunities from companies across India that visit the campus for interviews. Often after the internship, students are given PPOs (pre-placement offers) to join the companies after their degree is over.

IIT B has one of the biggest placement teams and opportunities across IITs in India. There are more than 1000 placements each year. The placements for M.Sc. Applied Stats is almost 100%.

IIT B hosts some of the biggest college festivals in India.

The entire course and stay at the hostel for 2 years was covered within 3,00,000 INR. The course fee per semester was around 50,000 INR. And there was 4 semester so that means 2,00,00 INR. The rest was for hostel fees. For students from economically challenged backgrounds, the fees are less. And there are scholarships as well.

There are a lot of clubs for different activities like theatre, arts, sports, debating, etc.

Yes, I was staying on campus. I was sharing with people from other courses. The hostel was a new building, so the rooms were new and the bathrooms were attached to the room. The cleaning was done quite frequently. The hostel was quite subsidized. The hostel mess served healthy food, the taste was the best though. The hostels also have good canteens which serve tasty food.

Great alumni network especially the one within the network. Also, there is an institute level alumni network that is well maintained and any student can ask for mentorship.

The exams were difficult usually. There wasn't much homework, only some assignments.

The teachers are highly qualified, with P.hDs and good research backgrounds (mostly from foreign universities). The standard of teaching is average and really depends from teacher to teacher. Most of them were not super - communicative. So, it really depends on the student to take initiative and ask questions. However, most of them are very helpful in solving questions and doubts of the students.
