A Mixed Bag of primarily amazing and life-changing experiences

I chose BS Economics out of interest, and it was the branch best suited to my requirements among the other options, as well as other IITs. The teachers of this course are highly eligible in my knowledge at least. Some have prior experience with the RBI as well. Teaching methods although remain a bit classical.

Internships are offered to students by the Career Development Centre in their pre-final year. Internship scenario is a little weaker compared to placements. However top companies do offer internships to students. Also students do use the opportunities available to them to upskill themselves and get internships earlier on.

Placements are good. Top companies like Apple, Microsoft and Google do offer placements and PPOs to students. Students are eligible for placements in their final year. Highest offers go up to as high as Rs. 2 Cr or 4 Cr. About 750+ offers including PPOs were made during first few days of the start of the placement season this year in IIT Kharagpur. Overall placement percentage as been above 85%. Profiles of placements vary, including a good mix of both core companies and tech companies. I intend to pursue MS in Economics or MBA, depending on future interests.

The fee is nominal, given the facilities provided. Not aware of any cost hikes. Scholarship opportunities are majorly income based more than merit based, which is not good. Most scholarships are either for top rankers in each department and year, or for those with weak financial background.

Life at campus is phenomenal. Lots of clubs for sports, SoCult (social and cultural), Technical, Research, etc. and on core skills like Debating. There are also branches of global student organisations like IFSA, 180DC, ShARE, etc. Library is huge, with great collection of books. Slightly disappointed with the fact that most books are at least 20 years old. New books more relevant in last 2-3 years are rarely available. But library is amazing place to study and absorb knowledge. Classrooms are huge, and new classroom complexes even have plug points at each seat. Teachers mostly teach through slides. Various sports facilities like Cricket, Football, Basketball etc. are available, alongside Squash, Badminton etc,.

Rooms vary with each Hall of Residence; they may be single or double/triple sharing. Most halls have comfortable rooms, which are just sufficient for according number of people to stay. Some though may feel congested. Overall facilities are decent, though they are definitely dated. Registration process is simple, where halls are allotted randomly, and one can then choose their roommate or be randomly allotted one. All hotels have cycle repair shops, night canteens etc. Affordability is decent overall. Mess food is not so good, which some hostels having terrible food. Rice may feel terribly undercooked and rotis will have raw maida on them or will be burnt. But one gets used to it or finds alternate ways.

I got in through IIT-JEE. One needs to clear JEE Advanced to be eligible to be admitted to an IIT, which in turn needs clearing of JEE Mains examination. Admission happens through JoSAA Counselling. No reservation benefits are availed. The admission process is good. Ample time is provided for students to choose courses in various IITs.
