Likes
- The IIT tag, the rich legacy and history, the buzzing campus life and a great friend circle are some of the aspects which I really like about IIT(BHU).
- The regular conduction of fests, workshops on various domains, cultural and religious events, etc.
- The extraordinary peer group, sharing space with some of the brightest minds of the country.
Dislikes
- Lack of infrastructure - the shabby state of hostels, classrooms and roads. In our first year hostel, Three people were made to stay in a room which would barely accomodate two.
- The open campus, which leads to unnecessary city traffic and clamour in the campus. The security is also compromised, with many cases of violence, theft and violation of female students.
- The attitude of the non-teaching staff, administration. They are inclined against the students and constantly need to be protested against to keep in line.
Course Curriculum Overview
The branch allotment in JOSAA counselling is on the basis of rank and not on the basis of interest or inclination of the student towards a particular course. I was allotted Chemical Engineering, and later got my branch changed to Electrical Engineering after the first semester. Each branch of Engineering is relevant for the overall development of the society and the curriculum here does keep that in mind, as far as I have observed in four semesters.
Internships Opportunities
At the start of third year, many companies come to campus looking for students for internship. These include Google, Microsoft, Sprinklr, APT Portfolio, Uber, JP Morgan, DE Shaw, World Quant, Rubrik, Quadeye, Amazon, Flipkart and many local growing startups. These companies provide lucrative stipends, and in many cases, a pre-placement offer. Those who don't secure campus internship try off-campus, where the IIT tag is quite helpful.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition fee for general category students is around One lakh six thousand in the first semester, and increases by a small amount (around Rs. 500) per semester. In four years, my total expenditure, which includes the academic and mess fees for the hostel, sum up to 11 Lakh. There are many scholarship aids available for low-income (EWS) students, and a few are also for general students. The institute emails us all the scholarship programs that are endorsed by it. Endowment and Merit cum Means, including Alumni sponsored scholarships are available to the students.
Campus Life
There are three big festivals throughout the academic year: Kashiyatra, held in January, is a cultural festival, Technex, held in March, is a Techno-Management festival, Spardha, held in October, is an athletic festival. The library is equipped with all the relevant books, but sometimes there is a shortage of books, and many books are in damaged condition. The classrooms lack a modern infrastructure and the facilities that come with it - like power ports, charging slots etc. Most of the lecture theaters are in a dilapidated state and need significant revamp to match the standard of IITs. Projectors are substandard and often stop working in the middle of a class. The good thing is that WiFi connection is present everywhere, and the speed is sufficiently good. There are many student-run groups and clubs, most notably, Club of Programmers, Business Club, Dance and Music clubs, and many more, covering various kinds of hobbies. Admission
The admission is handled by a body known as JOSAA. It is on the basis of rank in JEE Mains and Advanced, with JEE Advanced rank being considered for admission into the IITs. The college allotment occurs in 6 rounds, with more rounds provisionally. In each round, a candidate is tentatively allotted a college based on his rank, and has the option to lock or slide it. It was a tedious process, with the site crashing many a time, and failing to lock a desirable seat would result in the loss of that seat.
