- The campus playground is too small for the huge number of students to play in and it is full of rough stone pieces, which is aweful to play in.
- The buildings are quite old and needs more maintenance.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course I chose is BE in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. The curriculum is well formed like most major IITs. It has various real-world applications like microwave engineering which is the present and future of wireless communication for far distances. It course also has a nice placement history. In course curriculum and teaching methods I would recommend having a proper feedback mechanism both for teachers and students in regular basis. We are usually tested via three examinations per subject per semester which are two class tests( having 30% weightage of total grade) and semester final exam (having 70% weightage of total grade). The exams are quite easy to pass but to get a good grade you have to struggle and study really hard. So, the exam quality is reasonable.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for campus placements after end of 6th semester. Major companies visited are Texas Instruments, TCS, Cognizant, Infosys, Deloitte, HSBC, IBM, Capgemini etc. The highest packages on campus are about INR35,00,000 per annum. The number of offers are greater than number of students and more than 90% students get placed. After getting a degree I am looking forward to higher education.
Fees and Financial Aid
The university total fees including tuition fees and other fees are INR2500 only per year , which is way cheaper than average engineering college in India. This is why it is really hard to maintain such a prestigious institution besides government funds. There should be some hike in charges so that, some facilities are maintained regularly. The above mentioned fees is zero for the students with very low family income.
Campus Life
Our annual festival is "Sanskriti" and technical festival is "Srijan". They are typically held in month of March-April. There are also some smaller technical festivals held by different departments in different times of a year. There is a huge central library which is a mine of books and journals and all the departments also have their separate departmental libraries too. There is a digital library too in the central library building. We have basketball court, volleyball court, table tennis court, lawn tennis court, badminton court, cricket and football ground, chess and carrom etc. on campus. We have various kind of students-run clubs like photography club, cinema club, coding club, drama club, debate club, dance club, music club, mechatronics club, motorsports club, finance club, entrepreneurship cell( famously E-cell) etc.
Admission
The students are selected through West Bengal Joint Counseling Board on the basis of ranks in West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination(WBJEE). The form is usually available near December every year at WBJEE official portal. Application fees as per I remember was INR500. There are standard reservation policy for ST, SC, EWS, PWD and OBC candidates, but no separate reservation for female candidates like there is in IITs and NITs. The WBJEE toughness is nearly equal as JEE MAIN. But the question pattern is- Maths - 100 marks Physics - 50 marks Chemistry - 50 marks Total - 200 marks
Faculty
The faculty-to-student ratio varies with different departments. For my course it is nearly 1: 25. For some courses it is 1: 80+. So some courses are hampered a little bit due to that. All the faculties have PhD. They are really qualified and the teaching learning process is very friendly and satisfying. They are really down-to-earth to interact and so they are very much approachable.
