Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

Production Engineering is ideal for a student who wishes to take up a job in the core sector or wishes to pursue higher education (preferably MBA). Whether the curriculum really helps the student in real-world applications or further academic pursuits depend on whether the student wants to work in the core sector or the IT sector. I personally want to work in the IT sector, so for me, the curriculum will have no affect in my job performance. I'll have to take up courses elsewhere (online) and participate in events related to IT and entrepreneurship that take place in the university. The course curriculum cannot be improved since most of the students here joined because they were able to join JU and not because of a particular love for Production engineering. It's not what they wanted, it's what they got (based on their wbjee ranks). So an "individual student's goal based curriculum will not be possible". Timing and frequency of exams are based on the students' preferences and viewpoint

Internships Opportunities

3.5

You can take up internships in second year (only if you have connections) and in third year. The stipends are fairly good and the companies that offer internships are too. Yet, connections will be the best way of obtaining better internship opportunities.

Placement Experience

3.5

On-campus placements are fairly good. Each course has different placement records. Overall, the highest package ever received from an off-campus placement was offered to Bisakh Mondal (a computer science student) with a package of 1.8 CrPA (crore per annum). This year (2024) it was from etce department, a package of 85 lpa(lakhs per annum). The placements vary but the average is nearly 10-11 lpa in my department and as high as 18-22 lpa in computer science engineering, Information technology and electronics and telecommunications engineering. The companies that visited production engineering in 2024 are tcs, shyam metallics, aditya birla century, hsbc, vedanta, linde, avanti fellows, adqura, TU-Delft, Jk paper, eveready, mjunction, tce, deloitte, jindal stainless, paapri cloud tech, varroc, tredence, zs associates, pwc, Bajaj auto ltd, protiviti, greyorange, tega industries, paharpur cooling towers etc. Some students have opted MTech and MBA and have not been placed thus. 95% placed.

Fees and Financial Aid

If there was a world ranking for Return of Investment of colleges and universities, I have no doubt that Jadavpur University would be at the top. It's merely 9600 inr for a 4 year engineering course (Yes, that's the total fees), meaning that each year it costs 2400 inr. We were asked to pay 5000 inr upfront (which included counselling fees and the fee payment for the first 2 years). Apart from fees, the only expenses are hostel (very cheap), the food (as low as 25 inr) and travel and rent (if you have not opted for hostel and live in a rented apartment). The library offers books for issue and reissue(3 times) so there's no need to buy books. However, you'll need to buy lab copies, practical sheets, drawing equipment, printouts and xerox almost twice every week. The SVMCM scholarship (state scholarship) offers 60000 inr per year. The alumni scholarship offers 2500-5000 inr per year. There are many more scholarships. In terms of financial assistance, there is no problem.

Campus Life

4.5

Campus life is great. There are so many things to do that there will surely be things one will miss out on by the end of their journey. The hiking club trains students to climb and hike steep ground and plans hiking trips to hillstations. The music and dance clubs are very active and often organise events. There's the gaming and mechatronics clubs, entrepreneurship cell, Film society, finance club, debate society, coding club, IOTA club, comedy club, astroscience club, Ai mantle club, cricket, football, basketball, rugby, badminton, kabaddi, tug of war, chess, carrom, table tennis, karate, and theatre clubs too. The libraries (plural yes, one central and one library for each department) have an excellent number of books that can be issued and reissued. There are multiple fests that take place throughout the year: Sanksriti, u turn, ibtida, srijan, etc under the engineering faculty. The only drawbacks are the classroom technological facilties which are minimal.

Admission

criteria for enrolling into the university is to secure a good enough rank in the wbjee exam and participate in the counselling process using the wbjee official website. Every part of the counselling process is informed via sms and in the wbjee website portal. After having completed the first 2 rounds of counselling, the process is extremely smooth. The counselling dates vary every year, but mainly take place between June-september.marks that need to be obtained by a student based on their reservation categories are GEN>OBC-B>SC>OBC-A>ST (For pwd and ews, kindly refer to the wbjee orcr). I secured a general rank of 5021 and an obc-A rank of 178 with 53.334 marks in the wbjee exam. But during the counselling process, only the general rank is taken into consideration. The category rank helps divide students into the different courses keeping up with the law stating minimum percentage of students from each category. Wbjee exam is easy if you've studied for your school level exam.

Faculty

3.5

The teachers are extremely approachable (if they're present in the university). Most teachers come to the university only days when they have classes (and sometimes they cancel one or two classes a week). So, the timetable provided to us is not accurate, it's rather a gist of how the week might look if ALL CLASSES TOOK PLACE. That's nearly impossible in the first year. Some teachers have no idea what they're talking about while others are exceptionally well trained in their fields. I'm sure teachers would mentor us if we asked and if they had the time. In 2-3 subjects, the professor assigned to us does not take classes. Instead he/she assigns a phD scholar researching under his/her supervision in the university, to take the class. We haven't met our english (soft skills for engineering) and math professors yet. 2nd year onwards, the respective department professors start teaching where students don't face the same issues they did in 1st year. 95-100% of the classes take place then

Placement Experience:

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
