Remarks

The college has given me a lot of good experiences as well as bad. It can surely do much better with its students and their well-fare and placements.

Entrance Preview

VSSUT, Burla is one of the most esteemed and oldest colleges in Odisha. It is highly reputed and notable engineers have passed from this college at earlier times. It is famous for its intellectual students and high cut-offs required for getting into the core branches. Its Mechanical and Electrical branches are considered the best. It is adding more and more branches every year and increasing the number of seats for students to serve their career with excellence.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course curriculum is pretty similar to that of all other Engineering Colleges. The first year goes by studying all subjects that are similar with all branches. After the first year, the branch-related courses are dealt with. The questions for the exam were prepared outside, most likely from NITs. If any student wishes to change his branch, he or she can do that after scoring a minimum required CGPA for that branch in the first year. The second year deals with relatively easier subjects and interesting languages and new things to study. The third year is a little tougher since there are subjects that deal with advanced topics. Fourth year deals with subjects that aren't very essential in the long run but important to study. There are 8 semesters, each semester having 5 subjects each and 4 labs each except the final semester where there are no labs and only four subjects.

Internships Opportunities

The college doesn't have a facility to help in providing internships. However, they encourage that the students indulge in internships in the vacations.

Placement Experience

3.5

The placements in VSSUT has always been a matter of pride but since a few years, the percentage of students getting places have decreased as the . Less number of companies are approaching the college and since the Placement cell dwells in the hands of the students, they are facing difficulty bringing good companies to the campus. Also, the location of the college might be a reason that this is happening.

College Events

2.5

There are a various events organised in the college such as Sports Fest, Cultural fest, Technical Fest and sometimes even Poetry, Quiz and Drama fests. The college has time bounds for girls so the fests are conducted with a time limit. A lot of self-improving and fun games are played and prizes are given away for the winners.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is pretty affordable. It is not expensive as compared to the private colleges and even NITs. The amount keeps changing but it is all under 40k per semester. Students pay once for the even semester in Dec/Jan and another time for the odd semester in June/July.

Fees and Financial Aid

During the admission process, there are a number of banks sitting to give loans out to students. There are no scholarships or loans provided by the college though.

Campus Life

2.5

Burla, being a very scenic place, has its own charm. Away from the chaos of city life, it has a way of indulging us in a very peaceful experience despite the hectic life of Engineering. Gender ratio is not an issue in the college anymore. It is pretty much approaching a 50-50 scene. People from all around Odisha and even other states find the college the most suitable for pursuing their career in Engineering and Architecture. There are a number of Student Clubs starting with qUIZ clubs, Dramatics, Dance Club, Voice Club, Robotics Society and even a group of students doing social service for the needy children around the area. The students were pretty good and enthusiastic about their clubs and work. Their dedication has helped them bag many prizes and accolades.

Hostel Facilities

4

Hostels are good, good and clean rooms and corridors, they serve edible food and in girls hostels, they serve 4 meals a day and in boys hostels, they serve three meals per day. There are a variety of small fast food shops with really cheap prices in case one wants to have some good food. They have 6 boys hostels and 5 girls hostels and more hostels are being constructed to accomodate everyone.

Alumni/Alumna

The alumni network of Burla is pretty strong since the reputation of the college has always been at its peak. The alumni come and meet and make hearty contributions for the better future and infrastructure of the college. Seniors have always been friendly with their juniors despite the fact that it was once a place where ragging was a critical issue. It is a no-ragging zone now.

Exam Structure

The exams are conducted for a period of four years, two semesters per year. In each semester, there are four lab exams which includes practical and viva, one mid-semester exam of 20 marks each and one main semester exam of 70 marks each. The rest of the marks are awarded for attendance and assignments. The labs are graded as D, C, B, A, E and O, O being the highest. In case of absence or fail, there is a retest that students can take later as scheduled by the college. Lack of minimum of 75% attendance or failure in 4 subjects will lead to year back.

Faculty

3.5

The faculty of the college is pretty friendly and seeks to improve the growth of students. Some, of course, look for their own well-being more than their students but every on of them is striving towards maintaining the pride and heritage of the college, and eventually giving their students the best that the can offer. They are very wise and knowledgeable, though sometimes the students face difficulty matching up to that level.

I would rate the placements at my college as 3 out of 5. Students usually become eligible for campus placements from the sixth or seventh semester, and a few well-known companies do visit the campus every year. The placement cell helps with basic training like resume building and interviews, and many students, especially from IT branches, manage to secure jobs. At the same time, the average salary packages are not very high and top roles are limited, so a lot of students also focus on skill development, off-campus opportunities or higher studies after completing their degree

Students are eligible for placement from their 3rd year onwards. It has been only 2-3 months but I have seen several companies arriving at the college, prominent ones being Flipkar,Deloitte, Xerox, TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Microsoft, Dell and several others including startups. There is no accurate data on how many offers have been made this year, but there are rumours that more than 95% of the eligible students have got placements. After getting a degree my plans are if I dont land into a satisfying job then I will start my preparation of the military or start a new business.
